National Liberation Movement (Panama)
The National Liberation Movement (in Spanish language, Spanish: ''Movimiento de Liberación Nacional'', MLN) was a Panamanian right-wing liberal political party. It was created in 1959 by Temístocles Díaz Q., a son of the late President Domingo Díaz Arosemena and a prominent National Patriotic Coalition (CPN) leader and First Vice-President under Ernesto de la Guardia (1956–1960). A formal split in the CPN took place on 27 May 1957 when Temístocles Diaz Q. broke with the CPN and took with him six deputies of the former Popular Union Party and Authentic Revolutionary Party. The reason for the split was general dissatisfaction with the president's political leadership. On 3 June 1957, Temístocles Diaz Q., Diaz was joined in his stand by former President Alcibíades Arosemena and four ex-cabinet members and formed a new party named the National Liberation Movement to oppose Ernesto de la Guardia, de la Guardia. Roberto Francisco Chiari Remón
Roberto Francisco Chiari Remón (March 2, 1905 – March 1, 1981) was the President of Panama in 1949 and from 1960 to 1964. He belonged to the Liberal Party. Before being president He was president of the Chamber of Commerce. He worked in the sugar company of his family with his father Rodolfo Chiari and brothers. He was the only one of his brothers that was interested on politics. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1940. During the Ricardo de la Guardia administration he was Minister of Health and Public Works. He was one of Domingo Díaz Arosemena's vice presidents and briefly served as acting president in 1949. The Nationalist Republican Liberal Movement (, MOLIRENA) is a centre-right conservative-liberal political party in Panama. History The MOLIRENA was founded on October 21, 1981, by the now-defunct Third Nationalist Party, National Patriotic Coalition, National Liberation Movement and factions that had earlier split off from the National Liberal Party and Republican Party. This party evolved as part of an alliance of traditional, oligarchy-controlled, and primarily conservative organizations that opposed both the government and the military. The Republican Party (in Spanish: ''Partido Republicano'', PR) was a Panamanian right-wing political party. Its distant origins lie in the Liberal Renewal Party (PLR) founded in 1932. The PR was created in 1960 by and Max Delvalle and Eric Arturo Delvalle, all of them Jewish and backed by the Jewish business community. The PR supported the Roberto Francisco Chiari Remón administration in 1960-1964 and the Marco Aurelio Robles administration in 1964-1968. was briefly Vice-President to Arnulfo Arias in his 11-day government of 1968, despite Arias' well-known anti-semitism. The Third Nationalist Party (in Spanish: ''Tercer Partido Nacionalista'', TPN) was a Panamanian conservative, radical nationalist political party. The Third Nationalist Party was founded in 1959 by Aquilino Edgardo Boyd de la Guardia (a member of the old ruling families and oligarch) and Gilberto Arias Guardia (son of the former President Harmodio Arias Madrid and nephew of the former President Arnulfo Arias ). Omar Torrijos
Omar Efraín Torrijos Herrera (February 13, 1929 – July 31, 1981) was the Panamanian military leader of Panama, as well as the Commander of the Panamanian National Guard from 1968 to his death in 1981. Torrijos was never officially the president of Panama, but instead held self-imposed and all-encompassing titles including "Maximum Leader of the Panamanian Revolution". Torrijos took power in a ''coup d'état'' and instituted a number of social reforms. Torrijos is best known for negotiating the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties that eventually gave Panama full sovereignty over the Panama Canal. The two treaties guaranteed that Panama would gain control of the Panama Canal after 1999, ending the control of the canal that the U.S. had exercised since 1903. On December 31, 1999, the final phase of the treaty, the US relinquished control of the Panama Canal and all areas in what had been the Panama Canal Zone.
