Nanjing Amity Printing Company
Nanjing Amity Printing Co., Ltd. () is the largest producer of Bibles in China, and one of the largest in the world. It is a joint venture with Amity Foundation and United Bible Societies. History In its first year (1988), it printed 500,000 Bibles on a press donated by UBS. Since 1988, it has published Bibles in Mandarin and in several ethnic minority languages, as well as in many other languages for export. It is China's only legal printer of Bibles. The APC has so far published more than 100 million Bibles. Most of the Bibles printed are the Chinese Union Version (, 1919), the Chinese Bible translation used by the Protestant churches, or the less commonly accepted but more modern Today's Chinese Version. Recently the Pastoral Bible used by the Catholic churches has also been printed here. The Studium Biblicum Version ( zh, t=思高本, s=思高本, j=si1 gou1 bun2, p=Sīgāo Běn) is the predominant Chinese language translation of the Bible used by Chinese Catholics. It is considered by many to be ''the'' Chinese Catholic Bible. The Studium Biblicum Version is considered by many, including some Protestants, to be very faithful to the original manuscripts. History Xinhua Bookstore (in ) was originally established as Guanghua Bookstore (in ) in 1937 in Yan'an under the Propaganda Department of the Chinese Communist Party. Today's Chinese Version
The Today's Chinese Version (TCV) (Traditional Chinese: 現代中文譯本; Pinyin: Xiàndài Zhōngwén Yìběn) is a recent translation of the Bible into modern Chinese by the United Bible Societies. The New Testament was first published in 1975, and the entire Bible was published in 1979. The Bible uses simple, easy to read Chinese, and avoids complex and specialist terminology. The New York Times, apparently unaware of the Studium Biblicum Version or the translation by Lü Chen Chung, hailed it as the first Mandarin translation of the Bible since 1919. Text TCV is published in two different versions to accommodate the different translations used by Protestants and Catholics. Since the arrival of Christianity in China, the Bible has been translated into many varieties of the Chinese language, both in fragments and in its totality. The first translations may have been undertaken as early as the 7th century AD, but the first printed translations appeared only in the nineteenth century. Progress on a modern translation was encumbered by denominational rivalries, theological clashes, linguistic disputes, and practical challenges at least until the publication of the Protestant Chinese Union Version in 1919, which became the basis of standard versions in use today. Although the motive for making translations was to spread the Gospel, there were further consequences. The ''Chinese Union Version'' (CUV) () is the predominant translation of the Bible into Chinese used by Chinese Protestants, first published in 1919. Mandarin ( ; zh, s=, t=, p=Guānhuà, l=Mandarin (bureaucrat), officials' speech) is the largest branch of the Sinitic languages.
