Mzimba West Constituency is a constituency for the National Assembly of Malawi, located in the Mzimba District of Malawi's Northern Region. The National Assembly of Malawi is the supreme legislative body of the nation. It is situated on Capital Hill, Lilongwe along Presidential Way. The National Assembly alone possesses legislative supremacy and thereby ultimate power over all other political bodies in Malawi. Mzimba District
Mzimba is a district in the Northern Region of Malawi. The capital is Mzimba and the biggest town is Mzuzu, which is also the administrative headquarters of the Northern Region. The district covers an area of 10,473 km2 and has a population of 1,017,701 (2023). It is the largest district in Malawi. The district is inhabited by descendants of Tumbuka and few Ngoni people who also speak Tumbuka as the Ngoni language is extinct. Tumbuka is the predominant language spoken in the district. History Pre-colonial era In the late 15th century, the Zwangendaba Ngonis that fled from South Africa settled in northern Malawi. The Northern Region is a region of Malawi. It had a population of 2,289,780 in 2018, and covers an area of 26,931 km2, making it the smallest region both by population and area. Its capital city is Mzuzu. Starting in the north and going clockwise, the Northern Region borders on Tanzania, Lake Malawi, Malawi's Central Region, and Zambia. The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is a political party in Malawi. It was formed as a successor party to the banned Nyasaland African Congress when the country, then known as Nyasaland, was under British rule. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda is a Malawian politician. In 2020 she became Minister of Health in Malawi. Early life Khumbize Chiponda is the sister of Ken Kandodo, also a politician, and related to Malawi's founding president, Hastings Banda. Before entering politics she trained as a pharmacist, and worked in the Ministry of Health as a biochemist. Martha Mzomera Ngwira is a Malawian Democratic Progressive Party politician for Mzimba Hora. She became a member of the National Assembly in 2019 and she was appointed to be the Deputy Minister of Education. Life Her husband Christopher Ngwira was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau in 2018. He was not able to stand in the 2019 elections because the Supreme Court had declared him to be a bankrupt.
