''Coronation Street'' (colloquially referred to as ''Corrie'') is a British television soap opera created by ITV Granada, Granada Television and shown on ITV (TV network), ITV since 9 December 1960. The programme centres on a cobbled, terraced street in the fictional town of Weatherfield in Greater Manchester. The location was itself based on Salford, the hometown of the show's first screenwriter and creator, Tony Warren. Sheila Birtles
Sheila Birtles (also Crossley) is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera ''Coronation Street''. She was portrayed by actress Eileen Mayers. The character is famous for her suicide plot which was ultimately axed. Casting Mayers left the series in 1963 and was asked to return for two episodes in 1969. In 1974, the actress returned to filming for another stint as Sheila. Storylines Through his many faults, Sheila fell hard for Neil Crossley (Geoffrey Matthews), so much so that she did not see how badly he treated her. Neil only thought of Sheila as a bit of fun and after he stood her up on a date, she confronted him. Angered, Neil hit Sheila and left, leaving her devastated and she sank into a deep depression. Jon Rollason (9 April 1931 – 20 February 2016) was an English television actor, broadcaster and writer. He is remembered for the role of Dr. Martin King in the television series '' The Avengers''. Stanley Meadows
Stanley Meadows (born 14 July 1931 in Stepney, London, England) is a retired British film and television actor. Meadows was the son of a shopowner in Stepney Green. He won a scholarship to Forest School, in Epping Forest, and eventually graduated from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1955. After graduating he worked as a barman, storeman, waiter, and a shipping representative, while also performing in a variety of repertory companies. He worked with Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud and Harold Pinter and starred in a number of plays on ITV. Audio Typist
An audio typist is someone who specialises in typing text from a vocal source which they listen to. The original voice document is usually recorded onto microcassettes by someone dictating into a Dictaphone. The audio typist will have learnt to touch type at a high speed which means they can look at the monitor or keep an eye on a waiting area as they are typing because they do not need to look at the keyboard. A specialist player called a micro cassette transcriber (below) is used for playback of the cassettes to maximise the typing speed. An audio typist or a secretary with this skill will quote their speed in words per minute (abbreviated to wpm) on their CV and may be asked to demonstrate their speed and accuracy of this skill as part of the interview or application process.
