Myeongnyang Strait
Myeongnyang Strait () is a strait separating the mainland of South Korea with the island Jindo. It separates Jindo County and Haenam County, and is located in South Jeolla Province. It is also called Uldolmok (). Etymology The strait's original name was the native Korean term Uldolmok, which refers to reported loud sounds made by its rapid currents. When that name is rendered in Hanja (Chinese characters), those characters can be read as "Myeongnyang", hence the current popular name. Description The strait is about wide at the narrowest point. The average width is around . It widens from east to west. At high tide, the water speed reaches 11.5 knots and the depth reaches . The strait has proved important at several points in Korean history. The seclusion it provided allowed the Sambyeolcho Rebellion to take refuge here in 1271. The Imjin War () was a series of two Japanese invasions of Korea: an initial invasion in 1592 also individually called the "Imjin War", a brief truce in 1596, and a second invasion in 1597 called the Chŏngyu War (). The conflict ended in 1598 with the withdrawal of Japanese forces from the Korean Peninsula after a military stalemate in Korea's southern provinces. Uldolmok Tidal Power Station
Uldolmok Tidal Power Station is a tidal power station in Uldolmok, Jindo County, South Korea. The plant was commissioned in by the South Korean government. The plant cost US$10 million and has an installed capacity of (), generating annually, sufficient to meet the demand of 430 households. Additional 500 kW was commissioned in June 2011. The South Korean government plans to increase this capacity of by the end of the year 2013, increasing the demand cover to 46,000 households, while simultaneously working on the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station. In the Battle of Myeongnyang, on October 26, 1597, the Korean Joseon Kingdom's navy, led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin, fought the Japanese navy in the Myeongnyang Strait, near Jindo Island, off the southwest corner of the Korean Peninsula. Yi Sun-sin
Yi Sun-sin (; ; April 28, 1545 – December 16, 1598) was a Korean admiral and military general known for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin War in the Joseon period. Yi's courtesy name was Yŏhae (여해), and he was posthumously honored with the title Lord of Loyal Valor (). The exact number of naval engagements conducted by Admiral Yi against the Japanese is a subject of historical debate. However, it is generally accepted that he fought in at least 23 naval battles, achieving victory in all. In many of these engagements, he commanded forces that were outnumbered and poorly supplied. Sambyeolcho Rebellion
The Sambyeolcho Rebellion (1270–1273) was a Korean rebellion against the Goryeo dynasty that happened near the end of the Mongol invasions of Korea. It was suppressed by Goryeo and the Yuan dynasty. After the rebellion, Goryeo became a vassal state of the Yuan dynasty. Background From 1231, Goryeo was intermittently invaded by the Mongol Empire. During this time, Goryeo was controlled by a military regime led by the Ch'oe family. In 1232 the government under the nominal king fled to Ganghwa Island, which Mongol horse riders were unable to land on, and resisted the Mongol invasion. Jindo (island)
Jindo () is the third largest island in South Korea. Together with a group of much smaller islands, it forms Jindo County. It is located in South Jeolla province, just off the southwest corner of the Korean peninsula. The island is separated from the mainland by the Myeongnyang Strait; however, this strait is now spanned by South Korea's longest cable-stayed bridge spanning 484 meters.
