Muslim Alliance For Sexual And Gender Diversity
The Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity (MASGD), founded in 2013, is an American support and advocacy organization for LGBTQ Muslims. History The Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity was launched in January 2013 in Atlanta. The organization was formed by members of the Queer Muslim Working Group, with the support of the National LGBTQ Task Force, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Several initial MASGD members previously had been involved with the Al-Fatiha Foundation, including Faisal Alam, Urooj Arshad, Tynan Power, and Imam Daayiee Abdullah. Co-founders include Raquel Saraswati, Yas Ahmed, Imi Rashid and Sahar Shafqat. In 2016, ''The Advocate (LGBT magazine), The Advocate'' magazine named four MASGD steering committee members in its list of "21 LGBT Muslims Who Are Changing the World." MASGD is currently led by Mx. Queer Muslim Working Group
''Queer'' is an umbrella term for people who are non-heterosexual or non-cisgender. Originally meaning or , ''queer'' came to be used pejoratively against LGBTQ people in the late 19th century. From the late 1980s, queer activists began to reclaim the word as a neutral or positive self-description. National LGBTQ Task Force
The National LGBTQ Task Force (formerly National Gay Task Force; National Gay and Lesbian Task Force) is an American social justice advocacy non-profit organizing the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Also known as The Task Force, the organization supports action and activism on behalf of LGBTQ people and advances a progressive vision of liberation. The past executive director was Rea Carey from 2008-2021 and the current executive director is Kierra Johnson, who took over the position in 2021 to become the first Black woman to head the organization. The Task Force organizes the annual Creating Change conference, a skills-building event for community and allies with over 2,000 attendees each year. Al-Fatiha Foundation
The Al-Fatiha Foundation was an organization which advanced the civil, political, and legal rights of LGBTQ+ Muslims. It was founded in 1997 by Faisal Alam, a Pakistani American LGBTQ+ rights activist, and was registered as a nonprofit organization in the United States until 2011. History Alam founded Al-Fatiha in November 1997. The organization grew out of an internet listserve for questioning Muslims from 25 countries, and by October 1998 had developed numerous in-person chapters. At its height, Al-Fatiha had 14 chapters in the United States, as well as offices in England, Canada, Spain, Turkey, and South Africa. The name "Al-Fatiha" means "the Opening." Faisal Alam
Faisal Alam is a gay Pakistani American man who founded the Al-Fatiha Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing the cause of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Muslims. Alam arrived in the United States from Pakistan in 1987, at the age of ten, and resided in the rural middle-class town of Ellington, Connecticut. In 1997, he started an email listserv for LGBT Muslims that led to the founding of Al-Fatiha in 1998. He served as its President from 1998 until stepping down in 2004. In 2011, Alam and other LGBTQ Muslim activists were invited by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to form a Queer Muslim Working Group to evaluate the needs of the LGBTQ Muslim community. Urooj Arshad
Urooj Arshad (born 1975) is an American activist who was a co-founder the Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity, where she is also a member of the steering committee. Early life and education Arshad was born in Pakistan in a house built by her grandfather. Her middle-class, secular Sunni Muslim family lived in Karachi, where her father worked for a petrol company and her mother was a teacher at a military school. Her parents' families both originated from Punjab, and immigrated to Pakistan after Partition. She also had two younger brothers. She attended PECHS Girls School, a private school that taught in English. As a teenager, Arshad began developing crushes on girls in her school, although she did not have the language to identify them as such. Tynan Power (born 1970) is a progressive Muslim activist who advocates for gender equality and transgender rights in Muslim communities. Early life and education Tynan Power was born in 1970 in Washington, D.C., to Carol Cargill and James Power. His mother was an applied linguistics professor and his father was a federal mediator and, previously, a Catholic priest. The couple divorced when Power was a baby.
