''The Advocate'' is an American LGBTQ magazine, printed bi-monthly and available by subscription. ''The Advocate'' brand also includes a website. Both magazine and website have an editorial focus on news, politics, opinion, and arts and entertainment of interest to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender, and queer people (LGBTQ) people. The magazine, established in 1967, is the oldest and largest LGBTQ publication in the United States and the only surviving one of its kind that was founded before the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan, an uprising that was a major milestone in the LGBTQ rights movement. Joe Johnson (cartoonist)
Joe Johnson was an American gay cartoonist, whose Miss Thing and Big Dick were among the first ongoing gay comics characters, appearing in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The characters were featured in single-panel humor cartoons originally published in ''The Advocate (LGBT magazine), The Advocate''. Miss Thing is an unflappable, stereotypically effeminate, gay "queen"; the name was a popular expression in gay male subculture for such a person. Zach Stafford is a journalist and the former editor-in-chief of ''The Advocate'' magazine. He is currently a columnist at MSNBC. James Edward McGreevey (born August 6, 1957) is an American politician of the Democratic Party who served as the 52nd governor of New Jersey from 2002 until his resignation in 2004 amidst a sex scandal.
