Morgan State Bears
The Morgan State Bears are the twelve varsity sports teams representing Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland in intercollegiate athletics, including men and women's basketball, cross country, tennis and track and field; women's-only bowling, softball, and volleyball; and men's-only football. The Bears compete in the Division I FCS, NCAA Division I FCS and are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Teams In October 2021, the school announced their plans to resurrect a wrestling team that last competed in 1997. The program started in 2023, with NCAA Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Kenny Monday as their head coach. Morgan State wrestled as an independent in 2023 before joining the EIWA for the 2024-25 season. Rivals Morgan State and Howard Bison, Howard University are historic rivals. Morgan State University
Morgan State University (Morgan State or MSU) is a Public university, public historically black colleges and universities, historically black research university in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland. It is the largest of Maryland's historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In 1890, the university, then known as the Centenary Biblical Institute, changed its name to honor Lyttleton Morgan, the first chairman of its board of trustees and a donor. It became a university in 1975. Although a public institution, Morgan State is not a part of the University System of Maryland. It is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Morgan State Bears Football
The Morgan State Bears football team competes in American football on behalf of Morgan State University. The Bears compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, currently as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Bears play their home games at Hughes Stadium, a 10,000-seat facility in Baltimore. Morgan State began playing football in 1898, 31 years after the school was founded. The team's all-time record is 405 wins, 379 losses and 38 ties. 173 of those wins came between 1929 and 1959 when Edward P. Hurt was the head coach and the Bears won 14 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships. Josh Culbreath
Joshua Culbreath (September 14, 1932 – July 1, 2021) was an American athlete who competed mainly in the 400 meter hurdles—the national outdoor champion from 1953 to 1955; three-time winner of the event in the Penn Relays in the same years, and Olympic bronze medal winner in 1956, while he was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps; and world record holder in 1957. Culbreath was inducted into the United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Early life Culbreath was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, on September 14, 1932. He began running the hurdles in high school and in 1951 was ranked second in the U.S. in the 200 yard low hurdles and was the Pennsylvania's state high school champion in that event. Otis Johnson (athlete)
Otis "Jet" Johnson (born February 3, 1932) was an American athlete who competed mainly in sprint events. Running under coach Edward P. Hurt he was a key component of the Morgan State relay teams. From 1953 to 1955, he was the national outdoor champion and a three-time winner of the Penn Relays. Johnson later served in the U.S. Army. The Flying Four
The Flying Four Morgan State Track Relay Team 1951-1955, also known as "Flying Foursome" or the "Speed Merchants", was a track team of Morgan State University that was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame. The four members were James Rogers, Otis Johnson, Herman Wade and Joshua Culbreath. Coach Edward "Eddie" P. Hurt became the head track coach at Morgan State College in 1929. When the CIAA conference still stood for Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Coach Hurt reportedly said, "We had a heck of a problem getting started; there is no question about that." At that time, the small black colleges competed with one another and received little national attention. The Howard Bison and Lady Bison are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Howard University, located in Washington, D.C. The Bison compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)'s and Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for most sports. EIWA
The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) is an NCAA Division I collegiate wrestling conference. It held its first championship tournament in 1905, making it the oldest wrestling conference in the NCAA. The EIWA's charter members were Columbia, Penn, Princeton, and Yale. Thirty-three different schools have been members of the EIWA during its history, all schools from the Eastern United States. Its current members are schools in the Northeast whose main conferences do not sponsor wrestling, including the Patriot League, America East Conference, Northeast Conference, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and Coastal Athletic Association. Kenny Monday
Kenny Dale Monday (born November 25, 1961) is an Olympic gold medalist and three-time All-American wrestler from Oklahoma State University. He began wrestling at age six at a YMCA after-school program and grew up idolizing Olympic wrestler Wayne Wells. Monday is a three-time Olympian. Monday attended Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he won four state titles and the 1977 Junior National championship. He never lost a match from seventh grade through the end of high school and finished with a record of 140–0–1. As an All-American at OSU, Monday won the NCAA title in 1984 at 150 pounds. His collegiate record of 121–12–2 contributed to the Cowboys winning two Big Eight titles. He won the 1989 World Championship and a series of USA Freestyle championships in 1985, 1988, 1991, and 1996. The Morgan State Lady Bears softball team represents Morgan State University in NCAA Division I college softball. The team competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Lady Bears are currently led by head coach Larry Hineline. The team plays its home games at Lois T. Murray Field located on the university's campus. The Morgan State Lady Bears basketball team represents Morgan State University, located in Baltimore, Maryland, in Division I basketball competition. They currently compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Lady Bears play their home games at the Talmadge L. Hill Field House.
