Morettisches Opernhaus
The Morettische Opernhaus (also Moretti-Theater) was the most frequently performed opera house in Dresden from the end of the 18th century, in the era of Carl Maria von Weber and until the construction of the first Königliches Hoftheater Dresden. History From 1664 to 1667 a first opera house had been built in Dresden near the Dresden Castle, castle (Opernhaus am Taschenberg near the Zwinger (Dresden), Zwingers). Ferdinando Paër
Ferdinando Paer (1 June 1771 – 3 May 1839) was an Italian composer known for his operas. He was of Austrian descent and used the German spelling Pär in application for printing in Venice, and later in France the spelling Paër. Life He was born in Parma into a family of Austrian descent. He came from a musical family. His grandfather Michael Pär was a regimental band member from Peterwardein (today Petrovaradin, part of Novi Sad). His father Giulio Paer was a trumpeter with the Ducal Bodyguards and also performed at church and court events; his mother was Francesca Cutica. He was named Ferdinando after Duke Ferdinand of Parma by Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria, Duke Ferdinand's wife. Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient
Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient ( Schröder; 6 December 180426 January 1860), was a German operatic soprano. As a singer, she combined a rare quality of tone with dramatic intensity of expression, which was as remarkable on the concert platform as in opera. Biography Schröder was born in Hamburg, the daughter of the actress Sophie Schröder and the tenor Friedrich Schröder. The poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was her 2nd cousin. Her first role was at the age of 15 as Aricia in Schiller's translation of Racine's ''Phèdre'', and in 1821, aged 17, she was received with so much enthusiasm as Pamina in Mozart's ''The Magic Flute'' that her future career in opera was assured. Friederike Funk
Friederike Funk, married name La Grua bzw. Funk La Grua (14 November 1796 - after 1863) was a German operatic soprano and Royal Saxon Kammersinger in Dresden. Life Born in Meissen, the daughter of a postmaster from her hometown received her vocal training from Johann Aloys Miksch in Dresden from 1813. In May 1816, she received her first engagement at the Dresdner Hoftheater under the direction of Francesco Morlacchi. Afterwards, accompanied by her brother and at the behest of the Saxon king she spent two years in Italy to perfect her voice. She received this royal scholarship through the mediation of Morlacchi. ''Großes Sängerlexikon'' (''Biographical Dictionary of Singers'', literally: Large singers' lexicon) is a single-field dictionary of singers in classical music, edited by Karl-Josef Kutsch and Leo Riemens and first published in 1987. Leo Riemens
Leonardus Antony Marinus Riemens (3 December 1910 – 3 April 1985) was a Dutch musicologist and cultural journalist. He wrote a book about Maria Callas, and together with Karl-Josef Kutsch began a reference book about opera singers in 1962, which grew to ''Großes Sängerlexikon'', the standard reference in the field. Background and career Born in Zevenbergen, Riemens grew up in a family of physicians in Amsterdam. He studied musicology in Amsterdam and worked from 1931 as a feature editor for the newspaper '. Karl-Josef Kutsch
Karl-Josef Kutsch, also known as K. J. Kutsch, (born 11 May 1924) is a German physician and music biographer. With the Dutch musicologist Leo Riemens he co-authored the ''Großes Sängerlexikon'', the standard reference for opera singers. Life and work Born in Gangelt, Kutsch studied medicine, was drafted and participated as a soldier in the Russia campaign of the Second World War. He then completed his studies at the Goethe University Frankfurt in 1948. He practised as a physician from 1952 to 1989 in his hometown, together with his wife. A street in Gangelt is named after him. From the 1950s, Kutsch built a collection of records and singers' biographies. Niccolò (or Nicolò) Paganini (; ; 27 October 178227 May 1840) was an Italian violinist and composer. He was the most celebrated violin virtuoso of his time, and left his mark as one of the pillars of modern violin technique.
