Moonspell
Moonspell is a Portuguese gothic metal band formed in 1992. The group released their first EP, '' Under the Moonspell'', in 1994 and followed up with their debut album, '' Wolfheart'', a year later. They quickly became the most recognizable metal band from Portugal and a key figure in gothic metal. Fernando Ribeiro is co-founder, singer and songwriter of the band. Moonspell achieved success in Portugal with their 1998 album '' Sin/Pecado''. With ''Memorial'' (2006), the group also became the first Portuguese metal band to have a record certified Gold. They are also popular in Germany, where their albums consistently enter the Top 100 Chart. Gothic Metal
Gothic metal (or goth metal) is a fusion genre combining the aggression of heavy metal music, heavy metal with the dark atmospheres of gothic rock. The music of gothic metal is diverse with bands known to adopt the gothic approach to different styles of heavy metal music. The genre originated during the early 1990s in the United Kingdom originally as an outgrowth of death-doom, a fusion of death metal and doom metal. Lyrics are generally dark and introspective with inspiration from gothic fiction as well as personal experiences. Pioneers of gothic metal include Paradise Lost (band), Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema (band), Anathema, all from the north of England. Fernando Ribeiro
Fernando Ribeiro (born August 26, 1974) is a Portuguese singer, vocalist, and lyricist for the Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell. In addition to this activity, he is also a writer and translator. Life and career Raised in Brandoa, just outside of Lisbon, Fernando Ribeiro formed Morbid God in 1989, which later changed its name to Moonspell in 1992. Concurrently with his musical endeavors, as a young adult, Ribeiro studied philosophy at the University of Lisbon for a period of time with the unfulfilled aim of becoming a high school philosophy teacher. He has published three books of poetry, namely, Como Escavar um Abismo (2001), As Feridas Essenciais (2004), and Diálogo de Vultos (2007). He has also written a book of prose, Senhora Vingança (2011). He also took part in the project "A Sombra Sobre Lisboa - Lovecraftian Tales in the City of Seven Hills". Opium (Moonspell Song)
''Irreligious'' is the second studio album by Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell, released in 1996. It features some of the best-known songs of the band, such as "Opium", "Ruin & Misery", "Awake!" and "Full Moon Madness". The latter is usually the closing song during almost every Moonspell concert, which over time has become a characteristic of their concerts. Before the song begins, Fernando Ribeiro often makes the sign of the circle (symbolizing Moon) over the crowd. The third track, "Awake!", features a recording of Aleister Crowley reading his poem "The Poet". The album was promoted by the first Moonspell music video "Opium", which contained imagery of 19th-century-looking opium den. Darkness And Hope
''Darkness and Hope'' is the fifth studio album by Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell, released in 2001. Intro Sampler on "Rapaces" taken from Lifeforce. Several different versions were released, with different bonus tracks. One version contained "Os Senhores da Guerra", originally by Madredeus, the second featured " Mr. Crowley", originally by Ozzy Osbourne. Another version had a cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as the bonus track. The limited edition contained all three bonus tracks. Artwork The cover of the album features the "Moonspell trident" designed by a Polish artist Wojciech Blasiak. Memorial (Moonspell Album)
''Memorial'' is the seventh studio album by Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell, released on 24 April 2006 by SPV/Steamhammer. The album is available in three versions: a standard edition, a Portugal exclusive with the "Phantom North" bonus track, and a limited digipak edition with the "Atlantic" bonus track. On 16 January 2007, ''Memorial'' was certified gold by the Associação Fonográfica Portuguesa for selling over 10,000 copies in Portugal. This is the first time a Portuguese heavy metal group has received this award. Each of the limited versions and the standard edition end with a different song, but on every version the final track ends with a six-minute wolves-howling outro ("The Sleep of the Sea"), hence there are actually two official versions of "Best Forgotten". ''Wolfheart'' is the debut studio album by Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell. All of the tracks are in English except for "Trebaruna" and "Ataegina", which are in Portuguese, as well as the chorus of "Alma Mater". The song "An Erotic Alchemy" is a duet, inspired by and quoting Marquis de Sade.
