Mohammed Abbas (swimmer)
Mohammed Abbas Sabih ( ar, محمد عباس صبيح; born February 28, 1978) is a former Iraqi swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He is considered one of Iraq's most promising swimmers, having competed at the Olympics under Saddam Hussein's dictatorship. As part of his preparations, he was trained for the University of British Columbia Dolphins Swim Club in Canada. Abba qualified for the men's 100 m freestyle at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, by receiving a Universality place from FINA, in an entry time of 58.24. Abbas failed to advance into the semifinals, as he placed sixty-third overall out of 71 swimmers in the preliminaries. During the Olympics, Abbas also admitted that he shared friendships with Canada's Mike Mintenko, ever since he trained for the UBC Dolphins. Freestyle Swimming
Freestyle is a category of Swimming (sport), swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions. Uday Hussein
Uday Saddam Hussein ( ar, عدي صدام حسين; 18 June 1964 – 22 July 2003) was an Iraqi politician and the eldest son of Saddam Hussein. He held numerous positions as a sports chairman, military officer and businessman, and was the head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee and Iraq Football Association, and head of the Fedayeen Saddam. Uday Hussein was born in Baghdad. He was the eldest child of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and his first wife and cousin, Sajida Talfah. Uday was seen for several years as the likely successor to his father but lost the place as heir apparent to his younger brother, Qusay, due to injuries in an assassination attempt. Michael Mintenko (born November 7, 1975) is a former competition swimmer who represented Canada in butterfly and freestyle events in various international championships, including the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics. He is a ten-time medallist, spanning the FINA world championships, Pan Pacific Championships, and Commonwealth Games. Mintenko is married to Olympic gold medallist Lindsay Benko.
