Moerbeke Sugar Factory
The Moerbeke Sugar Factory was a beet sugar factory in Moerbeke, Belgium. The factory was last part of Iscal Sugar, a competitor of Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. In 2008, the factory was shut down and later completely demolished. Sucrerie Jules De Cock & Co (1869-1893) Foundation In 1869 the partnership limited by shares ''Sucrerie Jules De Cock et Compagnie'' was founded by contract. It is claimed that the Lippens family and the De Kerchove family together held 37.5% of the shares. Jules de Cock might be related to Albert de Cock, who got permission to found a distillery in Moerbeke on 5 January 1869. The Lippens and De Kerchove families The Lippens family had acquired a lot of land in the area, especially during the French period. In Moerbeke municipality alone, this was 715 hectares. Iscal Sugar
Iscal Sugar is a sugar producing company in Belgium. It was created in 2003 after multiple earlier mergers of sugar factories. After further reorganizations, Fontenoy Sugar Factory is now Iscal's only beet sugar factory, sugar factory, but this is again increasing production. Structure Iscal Sugar has three sites in the Benelux: * Fontenoy Sugar Factory in Fontenoy, Antoing which also hosts the group's headquarters. * Iscal Frasnes, which is the former Frasnes Sugar Factory in Frasnes-lez-Anvaing, Frasnes. Zelzate
Zelzate () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality only comprises the town of Zelzate proper. In 2021, Zelzate had a total population of 13,124. The total area is 13.71 km2. Zelzate is divided into two parts by the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. There is a concrete drawbridge and a tunnel to connect the two sides. Zelzate is known for the nearby polluting industry, which makes it the village with the lowest air quality in the country. Maurice Auguste Count Lippens (21 August 1875 – 12 July 1956) was a noble Belgian businessman, politician, and colonial civil servant and lawyer. Born into an influential Liberal family, Lippens practiced as a lawyer before entering local politics in his native province of East Flanders. His business interests included a number of colonial companies. After serving as governor of East Flanders (1919–21), Lippens was recruited to serve as Governor-General of the Belgian Congo (1921–23) in which capacity he launched a major administrative reform. After resigning from the post following disagreement with the colonial administration in Belgium, Lippens returned to his business career and re-entered Belgian politics. After serving in a number of ministerial position, his political career culminated in an appointment as President of the Senate (1934–36). Sugar Refinery
A sugar refinery is a refinery which processes raw sugar from cane or beets into white refined sugar. Many cane sugar mills produce raw sugar, which is sugar that still contains molasses, giving it more colour (and impurities) than the white sugar which is normally consumed in households and used as an ingredient in soft drinks and foods. While cane sugar does not need refining to be palatable, sugar from sugar beet is almost always refined to remove the strong, usually unwanted, taste of beets from it. The refined sugar produced is more than 99 percent pure sucrose. Many sugar mills only operate during the harvest season, whereas refineries may work the year round. Sugar beet refineries tend to have shorter periods when they process beet than cane refineries, but may store intermediate product and process it in the off-season. White sugar, also called table sugar, granulated sugar, or regular sugar, is a commonly used type of sugar, made either of beet sugar or cane sugar, which has undergone a refining process.
