It is headed by Minister of Home Affairs, currently Devendra Fadnavis since 14 August 2022. Balasaheb Desai (Daulatrao Shripatrao Desai; 10 March 1910 – 24 April 1983) was a politician and social worker from Maharashtra, India, who held important positions in the Maharashtra state government as home minister, education minister and cultural minister during the initial formation of the Maharashtra state.- - He was instrumental in establishing Shivaji University in Kolhapur in 1962. Career Desai started his law practice in Patan, Karad, Satara district. In 1940, he campaigned for election to the district local board and was elected president. Nashikrao Tirpude (16 January 1921 - 19 May 2002) was an Indian politician and first Deputy Chief Minister of the state of Maharashtra. He belonged to Congress Party. Vasantrao Banduji Patil (13 November 1917 – 1 March 1989) was an Indian politician from Sangli, Maharashtra. He was known as the first modern Maratha strongman and first mass leader in Maharashtrian politics. Patil served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 17 May 1977 to 18 July 1978 and again from 2 February 1983 to 1 June 1985. Shankarrao Bhavrao Chavan (14 July 1920 – 26 February 2004) was an Indian politician who served as the chief minister of Maharashtra twice from 1975 until 1977 and from 13 March 1986 until 26 June 1988. Early life and family Chavan was born at Paithan Village, Aurangabad district, Maharashtra. Chavan completed his Bachelor of Arts from Madras University and LL.B. from Osmania University.
