In 1986 it became the Department of Industry, following the creation of the Ministerial system. From then until 1996 the department was known as the Department of Industry, when it was renamed the Department of Trade and Industry. The Department for Enterprise (''Rheynn Gastid Dellal'') is one of eight departments of the Isle of Man Government. It was created on 1 April 2010 as the Department for Economic Development, largely replacing the former Department of Trade and Industry as well as taking on the tourism function from the former Department of Tourism and Leisure and several other functions from the Isle of Man Treasury and the former Department of Education. David Clifford Cretney (born 15 January 1954) is a Manx people, Manx politician. Biography Before going into politics, Cretney was a shop manager (1977–85) and he was also a businessman in the period 1985–2012. The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the "Keys of Man") and (the "Keys of Law"). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ("to choose"). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for "four and twenty": , the House having always had 24 members. David North MBIM (born 1942) is a British politician, a former Minister in the Isle of Man Government. He was born in Bradford of Manx parents and educated at Douglas High School. He then pursued a career abroad before returning as Managing Director of John North Ltd, J Smylie & Sons Ltd, and Chairman of House & Home Ltd. Edmund Lowey MLC (born 12 February 1938) was a Manx politician, who was a Member of the Legislative Council in the Isle of Man from 1982 to 2013. Early life Edmund was born in 1938 in Ballasalla and was educated at Castle Rushen and then worked for the Ronaldsway Aircraft Company from 1964, until 1975. He then stood for the Manx Labour Party in the House of Keys election of 1975 and was elected as one of the MHKs for Rushen. He continued in this position until his elevation to the Council in 1982. Allan Robert Bell (born 20 June 1947) is a Manx politician who was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man from 2011 until 2016, having been elected to that position on 11 October 2011. He was an Independent Member of the House of Keys for Ramsey from 1984 to September 2016, and served in several different ministerial roles. He was replaced as Chief Minister on 4 October 2016. Bernard May MHK (born 6 July 1941) is a British politician and entrepreneur, who was a Member of the House of Keys in the Isle of Man and Government Minister. Early life and career Born on 6 July 1941 to Harry Turner May and Lilian Freda (née Nicholl) in Hyde, Cheshire, he was raised on the Isle of Man and educated at Douglas High School. He later went on to own and operate a taxi company on the island and was also a member of Douglas Town Council before he was elected as a Member of the House of Keys for Douglas North in 1985 for the Manx Labour Party. He was re-elected in 1986 and 1991 before losing to John Houghton in 1996, following which he became a bus driver. In 1998, he unsuccessfully stood again. The Council of Ministers (; often abbreviated informally to "CoMin") is the principal executive organ of the Isle of Man Government. Its role is similar to, though not identical with, that of the Cabinet in the United Kingdom. Until 1990, its title was the Executive Council.
