The Mikoyan-Gurevich I-350 (''Samolet M''), was a Soviet Cold War-era experimental fighter aircraft. It was the first Soviet aircraft able to maintain supersonic speed. Design and development From 1947, work began on a new axial-flow turbojet by OKB-165, led by Arkhip Mikhailovich Lyulka. OKB Mikoyan-Guryevich designed the I-350 around this engine, the Lyul'ka TR-3A (redesignated as the Lyulka AL-5). Lyulka AL-5A
The Lyulka AL-5 was a Soviet axial compressor turbojet developed from the Lyulka TR-3 turbojet around 1950. It was flight-tested in a number of prototype aircraft, but was not accepted for production. Design and development The Lyulka TR-3A was redesignated as the AL-5 to honor Arkhip Mikhailovich Lyulka in 1950. It was a single-shaft turbojet with a seven-stage axial compressor. It had an annular combustion chamber with 24 nozzles and a single-stage turbine. It had a fixed exhaust nozzle and had a turbine starting unit. It was used in the Mikoyan-Gurevich I-350, but flamed out when it was throttled back on that aircraft's first flight on 16 June 1951. The Supermarine 545 was a supersonic jet fighter project designed by the British aircraft manufacturer Supermarine. A single aircraft was built, but remained unflown, largely due to the project having fallen out of political favour. The project commenced during the early 1950s in response to interest in transonic aircraft within the Royal Air Force. Supermarine, who was at the time engaged in the development of another front-line fighter, the Swift, decided to use this existing programme as the Type 545's starting point. Nudelman-Rikhter NR-23
The Nudelman-Richter NR-23 is a Soviet autocannon widely used in military aircraft of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. It was designed by A. E. Nudelman and A. A. Richter to replace the wartime Nudelman-Suranov NS-23 and Volkov-Yartsev VYa-23, entering service in 1949. The NR-23 is a single-barrel, short recoil-operated 23 mm (0.90 in) cannon. It was similar to the NS-23 but mechanical improvements increased its rate of fire by more than 50%. Its theoretical rate of fire was 850 rounds per minute, although United States Air Force tests of captured weapons achieved an actual rate of fire of only 650 rounds per minute. The NR-23 was later replaced by the Afanasev Makarov AM-23 automatic cannon which had a higher firing rate. The AM-23 was used in turreted installations for bombers. 23×115mm
The 23×115mm round is used in Soviet (USSR)/Russian/ CIS aircraft autocannon. Although superseded by the 30×165mm round the Russian Air Force still uses it in the GSh-23L (in the aircraft's tail turrets and in the UPK-23-250 gun pod) and the GSh-6-23 (in the Su-24). This round still serves in many countries and is widely available. The projectile weight is 175 grams. History The round was derived from the 14.5×114mm round by necking it out to 23 mm. The original rounds used a lower power charge of 33 g of sw 4/7 powder and achieved 690 m/s at a maximum pressure of 294.3 MPa. In 1954 an improved ammunition was introduced, featuring better projectile design and ballistic properties. The newer rounds have a powder charge to achieve 720 m/s.
