Mike Smith (skateboarder)
Mike Smith is an American professional vert skateboarder from Southern California. He is also the founder of Liberty Skates, skateboards. Smith is credited as being the inventor of both the ''Smith Stop'' (or ''Smith Stall'') maneuver, (which later became known globally as the Smith Grind) and of the ''Smithvert'', a personalized variation of the invert. During the course of his competitive career, Smith appeared on the cover of Thrasher Magazine twice; June 1981 and January 1982. In 1999, after years of not competing, Smith placed Third in the Master's Division of the Van's Triple Crown of Skateboarding in Huntington Beach, California behind Steve Caballero and Jeff Grosso. In a 2019 segment of Jeff Grosso's episodic podcast entitled Loveletters to Skateboarding (produced by Vans), Grosso describes him as, "Smith's bad ass. The guy could roll. Robert Lance Mountain (born June 13, 1964) is a professional skateboarder and artist who was one of the prominent skateboarders throughout the 1980s, primarily due to his involvement with the Bones Brigade. As of August 2017, Mountain continues to skate professionally and his sponsors include Flip, Nike SB, Independent Trucks, Spitfire Wheels, and Bones Bearings. Stephen Salvadore Rocco (born January 16, 1960) is an American businessperson and skateboarder. He founded the skateboarding company World Industries with Rodney Mullen in 1987. He has since sold the company and is currently retired. Career Rocco is an important figure in the early popularity of street skateboarding in the 1990s. Mira Costa High School (MCHS, "Costa") is a four-year public high school located in Manhattan Beach, California that first began operating in 1950. It is the only high school in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. The school's athletic teams are known as the Mustangs and the school colors are green and gold. In skateboarding, grinds are tricks that involve the skateboarder sliding along a surface, making contact with the trucks of the skateboard. Grinds can be performed on any object narrow enough to fit between wheels and are performed on curbs, rails, the coping of a skate ramp, funboxes, ledges, and a variety of other surfaces.
