Mikael Sorling
Nils Mikael Leslie Sorling (born 8 March 1953) is a retired Swedish professional golfer and golf administrator. He won six Scandinavian titles as an amateur and was awarded Swedish Golfer of the Year in 1977 and 1978. Early life Sorling grew up in Västerås in Västmanland, Sweden, as the oldest of two sons to his father Leslie, who was a dentist, and mother Margareta Sorling. At four years of age, he first tried golf at Halmstad Golf Club, close to his family's summer house in Tylösand in the province of Halland in the south-west of Sweden. He continued to learn the game at Västerås Golf Club. During nine years in the 1970s, Sorlings father was chairman of the club and initiator of the development of the course, later earning him honorary membership of the club. 1976 Eisenhower Trophy
The 1976 Eisenhower Trophy took place from 13 to 16 October at the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort in Portimão, Algarve, Portugal. It was the tenth World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 38 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. Great Britain and Ireland won the Eisenhower Trophy for the second time, finishing two strokes ahead of the silver medalists, Japan, who had also been runners-up in 1974. Australia took the bronze medal, three strokes further behind, while team of Republic of China finished fourth. The St Andrews Trophy is a biennial men's team golf tournament contested between teams of amateur golfers representing Great Britain & Ireland and the Continent of Europe. It takes its name from St Andrews in Scotland. It was first played in 1956 and takes place in even-numbered years; Great Britain & Ireland plays in the United States in the Walker Cup in odd-numbered years. In 2025 the St Andrews Trophy will move to odd-numbered years and the Walker Cup will be played from even-numbered years from 2026. The EGA Trophy was an annual amateur boys' under-21 team golf competition between Great Britain & Ireland and the continental Europe, Continent of Europe. History The match was instituted in 1967 and played every year until it was discontinued in 1994. The first time the Continental team won was when it was held in Sweden in 1980. Initially the event was held on the day before the start of the British Youths Open Championship. There were 5 foursomes matches in the morning and 10 singles in the afternoon. The Swedish Match Play Championship is a golf tournament played since 1904, held for both men and women. It is the oldest and most traditional golf tournament in Sweden. The name SM is a Swedish abbreviation for ''Svenska Mästerskapet'' 'Swedish Championship'. History From the first tournament in 1904 (for men) and 1911 (for women) until 1983, it was an amateur tournament, from 1910 open only for Swedish citizens, and the winner was the official Swedish champion. Since 1984, except 1985, the tournament has been open to both amateurs and professionals and for foreign citizens. The Swedish Golf Federation (, SGF) is the governing body for the sport of golf in Sweden, founded in 1904. The federation is responsible for administering the Rules of Golf, as laid down by The R&A, at the national level. It organizes tournaments, manages the national teams, and promotes the game. As of 2022, the federation organized 448 golf clubs and 505,577 individual members with 536 203 memberships, 74.4% male and 25.6% female. This makes it the third largest sports federation in Sweden in terms of active members, behind association football and athletics in first and second and place. SGF is a member of the European Golf Association (EGA). Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States, with hosting duties alternating between venues in Europe and the United States for each edition. The cup is named after the English businessman Samuel Ryder who donated the trophy and it is jointly administered by the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe, the latter a joint venture of the PGA European Tour (60%), the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland (20%), and the PGAs of Europe (20%). Scandinavian Enterprise Open
The Scandinavian Enterprise Open was a golf tournament on the European Tour that was played in Sweden until 1990, when it had a prize fund of £400,000, which was mid-range for the tour at that time. In 1991, the tournament was merged with fellow Sweden-based European Tour event, the PLM Open, with the resultant tournament being called the Scandinavian Masters.
