Microbicide Trials Network
The Microbicide Trials Network (MTN, 2006-2021) was a United States government-funded research organization working in the field of microbicides for sexually transmitted diseases. The MTN focused on research into microbicides which would prevent HIV infection. The MTN was a member of Office of HIV/AIDS Network Coordination, HANC. After its closure, partner organization HIV Prevention Trials Network took control of its projects. Research The MTN's notable research included various clinical trials. The results of the CAPRISA 004 trial inspired the research of the MTN and the microbicide field. The Vaginal and Oral Interventions to Control the Epidemic (VOICE) found a vaginal gel containing an anti-HIV drug to be ineffective at preventing HIV transmission.. The Office of HIV/AIDS Network Coordination, known as HANC, works with the National Institutes of Health HIV/AIDS clinical trials networks with the intent of creating a more integrated, collaborative and flexible research structure. The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) is a worldwide collaborative clinical trials network that brings together investigators, ethicists, community and other partners to develop and test the safety and efficacy of interventions designed to prevent the acquisition and transmission of HIV. CAPRISA 004
CAPRISA 004 was a clinical trial conducted by CAPRISA. This particular study was the first to show that a topical gel could reduce a person's risk of contracting HIV. The gel used in the study contained a microbicide. Background A previous study had measured the safety and tolerability of tenofovir in both sexually active and abstinent women. This study gave support to the idea that tenofovir was a drug which was worth examining as an HIV preventative. Study design CAPRISA 004 was a phase IIb, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study comparing 1% tenofovir gel with a placebo gel. 900 young women who were judged to be at risk of contracting HIV volunteered to use a study gel in their vaginas, with half of those receiving the microbicide gel and the other half getting the placebo (according to their randomization results). Dapivirine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor developed at Janssen Therapeutics (formerly Tibotec Therapeutics).
