Michael Maltzan Architecture
Michael Maltzan is the principal architect at Michael Maltzan Architecture (MMA), a Los Angeles–based architecture firm. He received a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University and both a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. Maltzan was selected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2007. Early life and education Born near Levittown on Long Island, Maltzan was one of five children. He first studied drafting in high school in Hebron, Connecticut. Career Maltzan founded Michael Maltzan Architecture, Inc. in 1995, with offices in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. His first solo project was completed in 1995 in the Downtown Los Angeles warehouse district. ''W'' (or ''W Magazine'') is an American fashion magazine that was launched in 1972 as a sister publication to ''Women's Wear Daily''. The magazine features stories about style through the lens of art, celebrity, culture, fashion and film. Background ''W'' was launched in 1972 by James Brady, who at the time was the publisher of the newspaper (and sister publication of ''W'', ''Women's Wear Daily''). The magazine was originally a semi-monthly (twice per month) publication until 1993 when it was relaunched as an oversized monthly publication. In 2000 Condé Nast purchased the magazine from Fairchild Publications. Winnipeg Art Gallery
The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) is an art museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Its permanent collection includes over 24,000 works from Canadian, Indigenous Canadian, and international artists. Alkali–silica Reaction
The alkali–silica reaction (ASR), also commonly known as concrete cancer, is a deleterious internal swelling reaction that occurs over time in concrete between the highly alkaline cement paste and the reactive amorphous (''i.e.'', non-crystalline) silica found in many common aggregates, given sufficient moisture. This deleterious chemical reaction causes the expansion of the altered aggregate by the formation of a soluble and viscous gel of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3, also noted Na2H2SiO4, or N-S-H (sodium silicate hydrate), depending on the adopted convention). This hygroscopic gel swells and increases in volume when absorbing water: it exerts an expansive pressure inside the siliceous aggregate, causing spalling and loss of strength of the concrete, finally leading to its failure. Terence Riley (curator)
Terence Riley (November 6, 1954 – May 17, 2021) was an American architect and museum curator. He was the chief curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art from 1992 to 2006. Early life and education Riley was born in Elgin, Illinois, son of Philip Riley a printer, and Mary Jo (Lundberg) Riley, a homemaker. He grew up in Woodstock, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.Arch in 1978, followed by an M.Arch at Columbia University in 1982. The Hammer Museum, which is affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles, is an art museum and cultural center known for its artist-centric and progressive array of exhibitions and public programs. Ann Philbin is an American museum director. From 1999 to 2024, she was director of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; before this she was the director of the Drawing Center in New York City. Early life and education Philbin's parents were an artist and a lawyer in the John F. Kennedy administration. She received her B.A. in art history and B.F.A. in painting from the University of New Hampshire, Durham, in 1976 and her M.A. in museum studies/arts administration from New York University in 1982.
