Michael Hertz Associates (MHA) is a New York City graphic design firm, best known for its 1979 design of the New York City Subway map and the station and subway car signage systems that the map engendered. The 1979 map, with some modifications, remained the MTA's official subway map until April 2025. The firm specializes in maps and environmental graphics for mass transit systems. History The firm was founded in 1969 by Michael Hertz (1932–2020). Their body of work also includes many other transit projects in the New York City metropolitan area as well as maps for major transit systems such as Houston, Texas, Washington, D.C., and other smaller transit systems throughout the United States. Nobu Siraisi
Nobuyuki "Nobu" Siraisi (1934 – March 10, 2016) was an artist and designer. He was a major contributor on the team at Michael Hertz Associates that produced the 1978 redesign of the New York City Subway map. Siraisi was born in Japan as the youngest of three siblings. He had graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts prior to coming to United States. Siraisi moved to New York City in 1959 to work as studio assistant to Isamu Noguchi. CBS featured Siraisi in television where his sculptures and paintings were covered in the early 1960s. He then worked as a graphic designer at Gilbert and Associates Advertising and at Michael Hertz Associates, where he had helped produce the redesigned New York City Subway map. Siraisi met and married Nancy Gillian in 1961, and they had two sons, Maro and Genji. Massimo Vignelli
Massimo Vignelli (; January 10, 1931 – May 27, 2014) was an Italian designer who worked in several areas, including packaging, housewares, furniture, public signage, and showroom design. He worked within the modernist tradition, emphasizing simplicity by using basic geometric shapes. He co-founded Vignelli Associates with his wife, Lella.
