Michael Hargreaves Whitten
Michael Hargreaves Whitten is an Australian jurist who served as Lord Chief Justice of Tonga from September 2019 to September 2023. Whitten grew up in Mackay, Queensland and is the son of a butcher and a boiler marker. He worked as a public defender in Brisbane from 1986–88, and then as a clerk for a Queensland District Court judge from 1988 - 1989. In 1990 he was admitted to the Queensland bar, and practiced criminal and family law. He moved to Melbourne in 1996, where he practiced civil and commercial law. In 2015 he was appointed a Queen's Counsel. In July 2019 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Tonga as Lord Chief Justice, replacing Owen Paulsen. His term as Chief Justice began on 2 September 2019. 2021 Tongan General Election
General elections were held in Tonga on 18 November 2021 to elect 17 of the 26 seats in the Legislative Assembly. Following the elections, four MPs were unseated for bribery. Background The 2017 general election resulted in a landslide victory for the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands (, or PTOA), and ʻAkilisi Pōhiva was re-elected as Prime Minister, defeating former Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni 14 votes to 12. Siale ʻAtaongo Kaho, Lord Tuʻivakanō (born 15 January 1952) is a Tongans, Tongan politician who served as the Prime Minister of Tonga, prime minister of Tonga from 2010 to 2014. Descent and naming Tuʻivakanō was born in Niutoua on Tongatapu as Siale ʻAtaongo Kaho. His parents were Siaosi Kiu Ngalumoetutulu Kiutauivailahi Kao and Fatafehiʻolapaha Liku. Owen Paulsen
Owen Paulsen is a New Zealand jurist, who served as Chief Justice of Tonga from 2015 to 2019. Since August 2019 he has been an associate judge of the High Court of New Zealand. Paulsen was educated at Shirley Boys' High School and the University of Canterbury, and later at the University of Auckland. He worked as a solicitor and later a partner for Harman & Co, and then as a member of the Employment Tribunal. He later worked for the law firm Cavell Leitch. In January 2015 he was appointed Chief Justice of Tonga, replacing Michael Dishington Scott. Queen's Counsel
A King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) is a senior lawyer appointed by the monarch (or their Viceroy, viceregal representative) of some Commonwealth realms as a "Counsel learned in the law". When the reigning monarch is a woman, the title is Queen's Counsel (QC). The position originated in England and Wales.
