Memphis Design
The Memphis Group, also known as Memphis Milano, was an Italian design and architecture group founded by Ettore Sottsass. It was active from 1980 to 1987. The group designed postmodern furniture, lighting, fabrics, carpets, ceramics, glass and metal objects. The Memphis Group's work often incorporated plastic laminate and terrazzo materials and was characterized by ephemeral design featuring colorful and abstract decoration as well as asymmetrical shapes, sometimes arbitrarily alluding to exotic or earlier styles and designs. Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon (nicknamed Nick) is an American pay television channel and the flagship property of the Nickelodeon Group, a sub-division of the Paramount Media Networks division of Paramount Global. Launched on April 1, 1979, as the first cable channel for children, it is primarily aimed at children and adolescents aged 2 to 17, along with a broader family audience through its programming blocks. The channel began as a test broadcast on December 1, 1977, as part of QUBE, an early cable television system broadcast locally in Columbus, Ohio. Martine Bedin
Martine Bedin is a French architect and designer. She was a member of the Memphis Group. Biography Bedin was born in 1957 in the port of Bordeaux where she knew Nathalie Du Pasquier who would be a fellow designer. She learnt about architecture in Paris. She was awarded a scholarship in 1978 and as a result she went to live in Florence. She discovered modern architecture there with Adolfo Natalini and the Superstudio group. In 1979, Natalini invited her to Milan, when she met the designer Michele De Lucchi and the architect Ettore Sottsass. Also in 1979, her Casa Decorata was displayed at the Milan Triennial XVI. She worked with Sottsass who was based in Milan. Corporate Memphis, commonly referred to as Alegria art, is an Style (visual arts), art style named after the Memphis Group that features Flat design, flat areas of color and geometric elements. Widely associated with Big Tech illustrations in the late 2010s and early 2020s, it has been met with a polarized response, with criticism focusing on its use in sanitizing corporate communication, as well as being seen as visually offensive, insincere, pandering and over-saturated. Other illustrators have defended the style, pointing at what they claim to be its art-historical legitimacy. Death Of David Bowie
On 10 January 2016, the English singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie died at his Lafayette Street home in New York City, having been diagnosed with liver cancer 18 months earlier.
