Mayodan
Mayodan is a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, Rockingham County, North Carolina, in the United States. It is a manufacturing site for Sturm, Ruger & Co., Bridgestone#Bridgestone Aircraft Tire, Bridgestone Aircraft Tire, and formerly General Tobacco (ceased operations 2010). Washington Mills Company, later Tultex, operated a textile mill in Mayodan until 1999. The town is named for two rivers that converge nearby, the Mayo River, North Carolina, Mayo and the Dan River (Virginia), Dan, and, according to ''Ripley's Believe It or Not!'', is the only town in the world with this name. Rockingham County is a County (United States), county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 91,096. Its county seat is Wentworth, North Carolina, Wentworth. The county is known as "North Carolina's North Star". History Settling and founding Prior to European colonization, the area eventually comprising Rockingham County was inhabited by Cheraw/Saura Native Americans. In the 1600s they inhabited several small settlements along the Dan River (Virginia), Dan River, though around 1710 they migrated towards South Carolina. Between 1728 and 1733, the Dan River Valley in the Granville District was surveyed by William Byrd II as part of efforts to delineate the North Carolina-Virginia border. Washington Mills-Mayodan Plant
Washington Mills-Mayodan Plant, also known as Mayo Mills, Washington Group-Mayodan Plant, and Tultex Corp.-Mayodan Plant, was a historic textile mill and national historic district located at Mayodan, Rockingham County, North Carolina. It encompassed four contributing buildings and two contributing structures in the town of Mayodan. The main spinning mill was built in 1895, and was a three-story, rectangular brick structure with a low-pitched gable roof. The mill was expanded several times between 1897 and 1954. It featured a four-story, one bay, tower with an open belfry at the top. Also on the property were the contributing knitting mill (1911), transformer house (c. 1900), railroad underpass, railroad spur, and frame wood shed. The mill closed in 1999. The mill buildings were demolished in 2012. Mayo River, North Carolina
The Mayo River is a tributary of the Dan River, which in turn is a tributary of the Roanoke River. All three rivers flow through the U.S. states of Virginia and North Carolina. It is named for Major William Mayo (''ca.'' 1685-1744). Course The Mayo River is formed by two main branches, the North Fork Mayo River and the South Fork Mayo River. Both forks rise in Patrick County, Virginia, gathering the waters of many tributary streams.
