May Brodney
(Maria) May Brodney previously known as May Francis (13 April 1894 – 21 August 1973) was an Australian labour activist and a founder member of the Communist Party of Australia in Melbourne. Life Brodney was born in 1894 in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern. Her parents were Julia, (born Roonan) and John Francis. They had both been born in Ireland, but they met in Australia after they arrived in 1888. She rejected her parents Catholic beliefs and by 1910 she was employed as an underwear-machinist. She joined Vida Goldstein in the feminist Women's Political Association and she started the ''Women's Industrial and Social Union'' in 1914 but she was disappointed by its progress. During the first world war she was an active opponent of conscription into the armed services. She joined the new in 1915 and became active on its behalf. The Communist Party of Australia (CPA), known as the Australian Communist Party (ACP) from 1944 to 1951, was an Australian communist party founded in 1920. Vida Goldstein
Vida Jane Mary Goldstein (pron. ) (13 April 186915 August 1949) was an Women's suffrage in Australia, Australian suffragist and social reformer. She was one of four female candidates at the 1903 Australian federal election, 1903 federal election, the first at which women were eligible to stand. Goldstein was known both for her public speaking and as an editor of pro-suffrage publications. Despite her efforts campaigning for women's suffrage in Victoria, it was the last Australian state to implement equal voting rights, with women not granted the right to vote until 1908. In 1903, Goldstein unsuccessfully contested the Australian Senate, Senate as an Independent politician, independent, winning 16.8 percent of the vote. The Women's Political Association of Victoria (WPA), also known as Women's Political Association and Women's Federal Political Association was founded in State of Victoria, Australia, in 1903 by Vida Goldstein and its purpose was to educate women in political matters. Non-indigenous women had gained the federal vote in and the association initially focussed educating the newly enfranchised women on politics, elections and the running of parliament with meetings, pamphlets, mock elections, and a women's parliament.
