Mary Waya
Mary Waya (born 25 May 1968) is a Malawian netball player and coach. Waya started playing international-level netball at age 14, and has played in more than Cap_(sport)#Netball, 200 representative matches for Malawi national netball team, Malawi. During that time she has competed in two World Netball Championships (1995 and 2007), three Commonwealth Games (1998, 2006 and 2010), and two World Netball Series (2009 and 2010). Career As a netball player Waya came to international prominence during the 2007 World Netball Championships, 2007 World Championships in New Zealand, where the Malawi national netball team, Malawian national team (the "Queens") finished 5th, their highest ever placing. She announced her retirement after the tournament, but returned to international competition the following year. The Malawi national netball team, nicknamed "The Queens", represent Malawi in international netball competitions. History Malawi have played in six World Netball Championships, famously finishing fifth in 2007 World Netball Championships, 2007. Nyasa Big Bullets is a Malawian professional association football club based in Blantyre, currently playing in the TNM Super League, the top division of Malawian football. The club was formerly known as Bata Bullets, Total Big Bullets and Bakili Bullets. Thandie Galleta (born 27 January 1993) is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi in the positions of WA or C. She has played in two Commonwealth Games and in 2025 she was an experienced member of the squad. Career She has featured in two World Cup tournaments for Malawi in 2015 and in 2019. Towera Vinkhumbo
Towera Vinkhumbo (born 14 February 1991), also referred to as Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda or Towera Nyirenda, is a Malawi netball international and a Malawi women's football international. As a netball player she represented Malawi at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011, 2015 and 2019 Netball World Cups. Vinkhumbo was also a member of the Malawi team that finished third at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. At club level, Vinkhumbo plays for Strathclyde Sirens in the Netball Superleague. Takondwa Lwazi also spelt as Takwonda Lwazi (born 15 May 1992) is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi internationally and for Malawian local club Blue Eagles in the positions of C and WA. She is known as one of the finest netball centre players to have played for Malawi despite being only 160cm tall in height. She also serves as a Police Sergeant in the Malawi Police Service. Joyce Mvula
Joyce Mvula (born 15 April 1994) is a Malawian netball player and winner of two Netball Superleague titles. Domestic career Mvula started playing netball at age 13 and became the first Malawian to play in the Netball Superleague after she was picked up by Manchester Thunder following the Netball World Cup in 2015. She has paved the way for a number of Malawian players to join the Superleague. Mvula played for Manchester Thunder for 6 years from 2017 until 2022, winning titles in 2019 and 2022. She was named Sky Sports Fan's Favourite Player of the Season in 2019. Mvula was named in the Netball Superleague All Stars team who played a series against England Netball in January 2021. 2025 Netball Nations Cup
The 2025 Vitality Netball Nations Cup was an international netball series hosted and organised by England Netball in February 2025. It featured England, South Africa, Malawi and Uganda. The series was played over two successive weekends. The first weekend was played at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena, and the second weekend was played at London's Copper Box Arena. With a team coached by Jess Thirlby and captained by Fran Williams, England won the series after defeating South Africa 61–55 in the final. It proved sixth time lucky for England. Since the Nations Cup/Quad Series was established in 2012, England had finished as runners up five times. Uganda finished third after defeating Malawi 50–45 in a play-off. Joanna Kachilika (born 8 June 1984) has been a Malawian netball player, team captain and coach of the Malawi national team. She plays in the positions of goal defense or wing defense. She has featured in two World Cup tournaments for Malawi in 2011 and in 2019. She has also competed at the Commonwealth Games on three successive occasions in 2010, 2014 and in 2018 representing Malawi. In September 2019, she was included in the Malawian squad to lead the team for the 2019 African Netball Championships.
