Market Rasen Racecourse
Market Rasen Racecourse is a National Hunt racecourse in the town of Market Rasen, in Lincolnshire, England. It is owned and operated by Jockey Club, Jockey Club Racecourses. Racing initially began at Market Rasen in the early 1800s, however found its current home in 1924, its first race meeting coming in April of that year. The course is a right-handed oval with a circumference of around one-and-a-quarter miles. Although National Hunt racing is traditionally a winter sport, Market Rasen stages a year-round programme of racing. Its most high-profile fixture is the Summer Plate meeting, normally staged on the third Saturday in July. Steeplechase (horse Racing)
A steeplechase is a distance horse race in which competitors are required to jump diverse fence and ditch obstacles. Steeplechasing is primarily conducted in Ireland (where it originated), Great Britain, Canada, United States, Australia, and France. The name is derived from early races in which orientation of the course was by reference to a Church (building), church steeple, jumping fences and ditches and generally traversing the many intervening obstacles in the countryside. Modern usage of the term "steeplechase" differs between countries. In Ireland and Great Britain, it refers only to races run over large, fixed obstacles, in contrast to "Hurdling (horse race), hurdle" races where the obstacles are much smaller. The Summer Handicap Hurdle is a National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Market Rasen over a distance of about 2 miles and half a furlong (2 miles and 148 yards, or 3,354 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late July. The race was first run in 1995 as the ''Summer Festival Handicap Hurdle''. It was awarded Listed status in 2008 but was downgraded as of 2020. The distance of the race was reduced from 2m 1½f to 2m ½f in 2010. Summer Plate
The Summer Plate is a Premier Handicap National Hunt chase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Market Rasen over a distance of about 2 miles and 5½ furlongs (2 miles 5 furlongs and 89 yards, or 4,306 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late July. The race was first run in 1995 as the ''Summer Festival Handicap Chase'', it was awarded Listed status in 2005 and the distance was increased from 2m 3f to 2m 5½f. The race was upgraded to Grade 3 in 2020 and was re-classified as a Premier Handicap from the 2023 running when Grade 3 status was renamed by the British Horseracing Authority. Martin Pipe
Martin Charles Pipe (born 29 May 1945), is an English former racehorse trainer credited with professionalising the British racehorse training industry, and as of 2021 the most successful trainer in British jump racing. The son of a West Country bookmaker, Pipe was an amateur jockey before turning his attention to training in 1974 at Nicholashayne, Somerset, near Wellington, England, at Pond House stables. AP McCoy
Sir Anthony Peter McCoy (born 4 May 1974), commonly known as AP McCoy or Tony McCoy, is a Northern Irish former National Hunt horse racing jockey. Based in Ireland and Britain, McCoy rode a record 4,358 winners and was Champion Jockey a record 20 consecutive times, every year that he was a professional. McCoy recorded his first winner in 1992 at age 17. On 7 November 2013 he rode his 4,000th winner. Hurdling (horse Race)
A hurdle race in Great Britain and Ireland is a National Hunt horse race where the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles or flights that are over three and a half feet high. They are typically made of a series of panels made of brush and are flexible. Hurdle races always have a minimum of eight hurdles and a minimum distance of two miles (3.2 km). National Hunt horses that have the size and scope to jump higher than the height of a hurdle use these types of races in order to gain experience of jumping obstacles so they can later be sent to jump bigger obstacles called fences.
