Prelude Handicap Hurdle
The Prelude Handicap Hurdle is a National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Market Rasen over a distance of about 2 miles and 110 yards (3,319 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September. The race was first run in 2007 and was awarded Listed status in 2011. It was downgraded to Class 2 status from the 2021 running. National Hunt Racing
National Hunt Racing, also known as Jump Racing, is a form of horse racing particular to many European countries, including, but not limited to: France, horse racing in Great Britain, Great Britain and horse racing in Ireland, Ireland. Jump Racing requires horses to jump over fences and ditches. In the UK, National Hunt Racing is divided into two major distinct branches: Hurdling (horse race), Hurdling and Steeplechase (horse racing), Steeplechase, as well as flat races called National Hunt flat race, “Bumpers”. Fergal O'Brien (trainer)
Fergal O’Brien (born 19 August 1972) is an Irish Grade 1 winning National Hunt trainer based in Gloucestershire. Background and early career O’Brien was born in Limerick, the youngest of six children. When he was four his family moved to Ballina, County Tipperary. Although the family was not involved with horses (his father was a bus driver and his mother a cook), two of his brothers left Ireland for England to work in racing. When O’Brien was sixteen, in 1989, he attended a course at the British Racing School in Newmarket, Suffolk, Newmarket and then went to work at the stables of Tim Forster in Lambourn. Alan King (born 1966) is a Scottish racehorse trainer specialising mainly in National Hunt racing. He is based at Barbury Castle stables near Wroughton, Wiltshire. Career King was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland on 13 December 1966. He worked in Scotland under John Wilson at Cree Lodge, before joining David Nicholson as assistant trainer until Nicholson's retirement. Nicholas Gordon Richards (born 25 February 1956 in Alnwick, Northumberland) is a British racehorse trainer specialising mainly in National Hunt racing. He is based at stables at Greystoke, near Penrith, Cumbria, England He was British champion amateur flat jockey in 1973 and subsequently worked as assistant trainer to his father, Gordon W. Richards. Hurdling (horse Race)
A hurdle race in Great Britain and Ireland is a National Hunt horse race where the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles or flights that are over three and a half feet high. They are typically made of a series of panels made of brush and are flexible. Hurdle races always have a minimum of eight hurdles and a minimum distance of two miles (3.2 km). National Hunt horses that have the size and scope to jump higher than the height of a hurdle use these types of races in order to gain experience of jumping obstacles so they can later be sent to jump bigger obstacles called fences. Hurdle races tend to be run at a faster pace than Chases as the height of the hurdle is much lower than a chasing fence.
