Marieke (song)
"Marieke" is a 1961 song by the Belgian singer Jacques Brel. The song In "Marieke" Brel sings about a Flemish girl, Marieke, whom he once loved and who lived "between the towers of Bruges and Ghent". He wants her to love him again in the "flat country of Flanders" (a reference to another song by him, "Le Plat Pays"). It is the only song where he sings both in his native French language and in Dutch, the other major language of his bilingual home country Belgium. Brel recorded a version of the song entirely in Dutch as well, with lyrics by Eric Franssen. Jacques Romain Georges Brel (; 8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978) was a Belgian singer and actor who composed and performed theatrical songs. He generated a large, devoted following—initially in Belgium and France, but later throughout the world. He is considered a master of the modern chanson. Although he recorded most of his songs in French and occasionally in Dutch, he became an influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers, such as Scott Walker, David Bowie, Brett Anderson, Alex Harvey, Marc Almond, Neil Hannon, and Rod McKuen. Jure Ivanušič (born 24 March 1973 in Maribor) is a Slovene theatre and film actor, director, playwright, concert pianist, composer, chansonnier and translator. He studied drama at the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television and piano at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz. Herman Van Veen
Hermannus Jantinus van Veen (born 14 March 1945) is a Dutch stage performer, actor, author, singer-songwriter and musician. He worked with accompanists Laurens van Rooyen and Erik van der Wurff, both of whom were pianists and composers. In addition to performing internationally, Van Veen is famous as the creator of '' Alfred J. Kwak'' (1976). The original one-man theatre show was adapted as a Dutch-German-Japanese cartoon (1989), which was broadcast internationally. Klaus Hoffman
Klaus Hofmann (born 20 March 1939) is a German musicologist who is an expert on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in Würzburg, Hofmann studied after graduation (1958) from 1958 to 1959 at the University of Erlangen. He then continued his studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. Laïs (band)
Laïs is a Flemish group that creates folk, and world music consisting of polyphonic close harmony songs, occasionally a cappella, based on self-composed melodies with lyrics dating back to the Middle Ages. "Laïs" is a Celtic word, meaning "voice". History Laïs' career started in 1994, when Jorunn Bauweraerts and Annelies Brosens, together with Soetkin Collier (who later became a vocalist with the Belgian folk music group Urban Trad) performed a song at a folk festival in Gooik, near Brussels. Somewhat later, Collier left the group and Nathalie Delcroix joined. They had their breakthrough after their appearance at Folk Dranouter, near Ypres, in 1996. Laurika Rauch, (born 1 November 1950 in Cape Town) is a South African singer who performs in both Afrikaans and English. She had a hit single in 1979 with ''Kinders van die Wind'' (''Children of the Wind''), written by Koos du Plessis. The song featured prominently in the Afrikaans television series "Phoenix & Kie" in the late seventies.
