Margie Reiger
Margie Reiger was a silent movie actress. Reiger was the leading lady in Charlie Chaplin's 1915 film '' By the Sea''. This one-reel short film was filmed in one day in the vicinity of the pier in Venice, California. The BBFC turned down ''A Woman'' when it was submitted in March 1915, although they later relented and the film was shown in the UK in July 1916. This was either for Chaplin's transvestitism, appearing disguised as a woman, or for Charles Inslee's pursuit of Reiger in a park, the "premeditated seduction of a girl". She acted opposite Bernard "Ben" Turpin in ''The Wrong Coat'', also in 1915. Ben Turpin
Bernard "Ben" Turpin (September 19, 1869 – July 1, 1940) was an American comedian and actor, best remembered for his work in silent films. His trademarks were his Esotropia, cross-eyed appearance and adeptness at vigorous physical comedy. A sometimes vaudeville performer, he was "discovered" for film while working as the janitor for Essanay Studios in Chicago. Turpin went on to work with notable performers such as Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy, and was a part of the Mack Sennett studio team. He is believed to have been the first filmed "victim" of the Pieing, pie in the face gag. When sound came to films, Turpin chose to retire, having invested profitably in real estate, although he did do occasional cameos. ''By the Sea'' is a 1915 American silent comedy film Charlie Chaplin made while waiting for a studio to work in Los Angeles. He had just left Niles Essanay Studio after doing five films at that location. ''By the Sea'' was filmed all on location in Santa Monica on the beach near Ocean Park Pier and on Crystal Pier in April 1915. The story centers on Charlie's Little Tramp character and how he gets into trouble trying to grab the attention of women on the beach. Edna Purviance plays one of the wives in whom he shows interest. ''A Woman'' was Charlie Chaplin's ninth film for Essanay Studios, Essanay Films. It was made in Los Angeles at the Majestic Studio and released in 1915 in film, 1915. Plot A well-to-do family of three is asleep on a park bench. The father (Charles Insley) is awakened when a pretty girl (Margie Reiger) trips over his outstretched feet. The father is an incorrigible womanizer and immediately follows the girl to another park bench while his wife (Marta Golden) and adult daughter (Edna Purviance) remain asleep. He briefly departs to buy himself and the girl drinks from a refreshment stand. As soon as he leaves, Charlie arrives at the park bench where the pretty girl is seated. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is a non-governmental organisation founded by the British film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works (such as television programmes, trailers, adverts, public information/campaigning films, menus, bonus content, etc.) released on physical media within the United Kingdom.
