Marcus Eli Ravage
Marcus Eli Ravage (Revici) (June 25, 1884, Bârlad, Romania – October 6, 1965, Grasse, France) was a Jewish American immigrant writer who wrote many books and articles about immigration in America and Europe between the world wars. Best known for his autobiographical book ''An American in the Making'' (1917), he is also known for his 1928 article, "A Real Case Against the Jews,” a satirical attack on antisemitism. He was also a biographer of the Rothschild family, as well as of Napoleon's second wife, Marie Louise. In addition to his longer works, he served as European correspondent for The Nation, and wrote for both Harper’s Magazine and The New Republic. His articles "A real case against the Jews" and "Commissary to the Gentiles", published in the January and February 1928 issues of ''Century Magazine'', were apparently translated as "a devastating admission" first in the '' Czernowitz Allgemeine Zeitung'' on September 2, 1933. Bârlad
Bârlad () is a city in Vaslui County, Romania. It lies on the banks of the river Bârlad (river), Bârlad, which waters the high plains of Western Moldavia. At Bârlad the railway from Iași diverges, one branch skirting the river Siret (river), Siret, the other skirting the Prut; both reunite at Galați. Along with a maze of narrow and winding streets, Bârlad features several notable modern buildings, including the hospital administered by the Saint Spiridion Foundation of Iași. In the vicinity of the city are the ruins of a Roman camp. The city is the birthplace of Romanian ''Domnitor'' (Ruler) and diplomat Alexandru Ioan Cuza. ''Germany Must Perish!'' is a 104-page book written by Theodore N. Kaufman, which he self-published in 1941 in the United States. The book advocated genocide through the sterilization of all Germans and the territorial dismemberment of Germany, believing that this would achieve world peace. Kaufman founded the Argyle Press in Newark, New Jersey, United States, in order to publish this book. He was the sole proprietor of the Argyle Press, which is not known to have published any other works. The Nazi Party used the book, written by a Jewish author, to support their argument that Jews were plotting against their country. Contents Kaufman advocated the mass extermination of the German people through forced sterilization and the territorial dismemberment of Germany after an Allied victory in World War II. ''A Racial Program for the Twentieth Century'' (occasionally ''A Radical Program for the Twentieth Century'') was the imaginary book title of a 1950s hoax purporting a foreign communist plot to increase racial tensions in the United States. The hoax gained public notoriety when a congressman read a supposed quotation from the book to argue against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. The phony quotation was later traced to the antisemite Eustace Mullins. On June 7, 1957, during a debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1957, Rep. Thomas Abernethy of Mississippi read into the ''Congressional Record'' a supposed quotation from the nonexistent book, which was purported to have been written by an "Israel Cohen" in 1912. Samuel Roth
Samuel Roth (1893 - July 3rd, 1974) was an American publisher and writer. He was the plaintiff in the landmark 1957 case '' Roth v. United States'', in which the United States Supreme Court redefined the constitutional test for determining which constitutes obscene material unprotected by the First Amendment. It became a template for the liberalizing First Amendment decisions in the 1960s. Roth spent nine years in jail on state and federal obscenity convictions, spending eight years in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary. Background Roth, a Jew, was born in 1893 in Nuszcze, then Galicia, now in Ukraine. His Hebrew name was "Mshilliam" (Meshulam). The family emigrated to the Lower East Side of Manhattan when he was 4 in 1897. He started working at age 8 as an egg chandler, at 10 as a newsboy, and at 14 as a baker.
