Marc Delafontaine
Marc Delafontaine (March 31, 1837/1838, Céligny, Switzerland–1911) was a Switzerland, Swiss chemist and spectroscopist who was involved in discovering and investigating some of the rare earth elements. Career Delafontaine studied with Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac at the University of Geneva. He also worked at the University of Geneva. Delafontaine moved to the United States of America, arriving in New York in 1870, and later becoming a naturalized citizen. He taught in Chicago, Illinois at city high schools, and at a women's college. He also worked as an analytical chemist with the Chicago Police Department. Research Holmium In 1878, along with Jacques-Louis Soret, Delafontaine first observed holmium spectroscopically. In 1879, Per Teodor Cleve chemically separated it from thulium and erbium. Delaf
Delaf (the pen name of Marc Delafontaine, born October 9, 1973) is a ''French-speaking Quebecer, Québécois'' comic strip writer, cartoonist, animator and scriptwriter. His is best known for his work in ''The Bellybuttons'' (''Les Nombrils''), a comics feature that he co-created with his then wife, Maryse Dubuc. Biography Born in Quebec in 1973, Marc Delafontaine initially began his career working for the animation studio CINAR as an animator, layout artist and storyboarder for such shows as Caillou and The Little Lulu Show Afterwards, he would later move on to working as an illustrator, illustrating brochures meant to teach French as a second language. Carl Gustaf Mosander
Carl Gustaf Mosander (10 September 1797 – 15 October 1858) was a Swedish chemist. He discovered the rare earth elements lanthanum, erbium and terbium. Early life and education Born in Kalmar, Mosander attended school there until he moved to Stockholm with his mother in 1809. In Stockholm, he became an apprentice at the ''Ugglan'' pharmacy. He took his pharmacy examination in 1817, but had an interest in medicine and joined the Karolinska Institute in 1820. He passed his medical examination in 1825. He worked in the laboratory of Jöns Jakob Berzelius and became a close friend of fellow student Friedrich Wöhler. Career In 1832 Jöns Jakob Berzelius retired in favor of Mosander, his student, who succeeded him as professor of chemistry and pharmacy in the Karolinska Institute. Upton, New York
Upton is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located on Eastern Long Island in the town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is the home of the Brookhaven National Laboratory and a National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office (WFO) on the grounds of the national lab. This NWS WFO is code "OKX", and serves the New York metropolitan area. The town is so named because it was the site of the U.S. Army's Camp Upton, which was active from 1917 until 1920, and again from 1940 until 1946. Nils Johan Berlin
Nils Johan Berlin (Nils Johannes Berlin) (18 February 1812 – 27 December 1891) was a Sweden, Swedish chemist and physician, who held various professorships at the University of Lund from 1843 to 1864. Berlin was the first chemist who took the initiative to write a textbook on elementary science, the purpose being to provide basic science education for the Public, general public. His chemistry research emphasized the study of minerals, especially the newly-discovered rare earths, having devised means of separating yttrium and erbium. The mineral berlinite (a type of aluminium phosphate) is named after him. Berlin became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1844.
