Manta Pacific Research Foundation
The Manta Pacific Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on manta ray conservation. Based on the Big Island of Hawaii, the foundation's stated objective is to "study manta rays in their natural habitat, conduct scientific research, provide education programs for the public about manta rays and the marine environment, and to establish and promote global manta ray conservation". The foundation has been active in protection of the manta rays in Hawaii, public education about manta rays, and scientific research. The foundation maintains the identification database which contains pictures of the unique spot patterns on the ventral side of the individual mantas so they can be identified and tracked. Manta Ray
Manta rays are large Batoidea, rays belonging to the genus ''Mobula'' (formerly its own genus ''Manta''). The larger species, ''Giant oceanic manta ray, M. birostris'', reaches in width, while the smaller, ''Reef manta ray, M. alfredi'', reaches . Both have triangular Pectoral fin#AnchPectoral, pectoral fins, horn-shaped cephalic fins and large, forward-facing mouths. They are classified among the Myliobatiformes (stingrays and relatives) and are placed in the Family (biology), family Eagle ray, Myliobatidae (eagle rays). They have the largest brain-to-body ratio of all fish, and can pass the mirror test. Mantas are found in warm temperate, subtropical and tropical waters. Linda Lingle
Linda Lingle (; June 4, 1953) is an American politician who served as the sixth governor of Hawaii from 2002 to 2010. She was the first Republican elected governor of Hawaii since 1959, and was the state's first female and first Jewish governor. Prior to serving as governor, Lingle served as mayor of Maui County from 1991 to 1999 and as chair of the Hawaii Republican Party from 1999 to 2002. Manta Ray Night Dive
A manta ray night dive is a scuba diving or snorkeling excursion to view manta rays at night. This activity is especially popular on the big island of Hawai'i, where divers and snorkelers can observe manta rays during their nocturnal feeding in their natural habitat. Description Depending on the amount of microscopic plankton present, the number of manta rays will vary. Some days no manta rays are seen while on days with high plankton levels upwards of a dozen may be present. While diving, scuba divers shine lights up - known as "bonfire" or "campfire" diving - while snorkelers shine them down creating a column of light which attracts millions of minuscule plankton, which in turn attracts the manta rays.
