Manila Golf Club
The Manila Golf and Country Club is a golf course and country club in Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines. History Early years The precursor of the Manila Golf and Country Club (MGCC) is the Manila Golf Club (MGC) which was formed by a group of Englishmen which built a seven-hole golf course in Pasay (at the site later occupied by the Manila Polo Club). They have organized themselves of a "golf club of some sort" by 1902. In 1906, a new nine-hole course was built in Caloocan to accommodate the MGC's growing membership. In 1909, the land where the golf club stands was purchased and MGC was incorporated. The MGC organized the Club Championship which was the de facto top golf tournament in the Philippine islands until the organization of the Philippine Open in 1913 which the club sponsored in its early years. Forbes Park, Makati
Forbes Park is a private subdivision, gated community, and barangay in Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines. Established in 1940s partly out of the nearby barangay Pinagkaisahan, Forbes Park was named after William Cameron Forbes, the fifth American governor-general of the Philippines during the American Insular Government. Philippine Open (golf)
The Philippine Open is an annual men's professional golf tournament, currently played on the Asian Tour. History The Philippine Open was first held in Caloocan in 1913 and was sponsored by the Manila Golf Club. It was moved to the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in 1935. In the late 1980s, the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) took over the organization of the tournament and held it in other courses in the country. The event was held in a variety of different golf courses around the Philippines and was an official money event on the Asian Tour from 1999 to 2015, having previously been a founding tournament on the Asia Golf Circuit. In March 2006 the NGAP granted all marketing rights for the tournament from 2006 to 2010 to the Asian Tour, which announced an aspiration to increase the prize fund from the 2006 level of US$200,000 to $1 million. William James Shaw
William James Bernard Shaw (September 20, 1877 – March 1, 1939), also known as Bill Shaw, was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist based in the Philippines. Shaw worked as a busboy on a US Army transport ship to pay his passage to Manila, arriving in 1901 and never leaving hence. He eventually became part owner of Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific. He also served as President of the Rotary Club of Manila from 1925 to 1926. Shaw is known for being the founder, organizer and president of Wack Wack Golf and Country Club. Shaw started Wack Wack in 1930 – because he was disgusted that Larry Montes, a caddie who had won the 1929 Philippine Open tournament and later many subsequent tournaments at the Manila Golf Club, of which Shaw was a member, had been asked to leave the tournament celebration, by virtue of a rule against the presence of caddies inside the Manila Golf Club. Larry Montes
Abundio "Larry" Montes (February 28, 1911 – 1996) was a Filipino professional golfer who is the 13-time Philippine Open champion. Early life and education Montes was born on February 28, 1911, in Santa Maria, Bulacan. Montes has at least two younger brothers and two younger sisters. His family moved to Manila when he was age two where he later attended school. He studied at the Tondo Primary School and Meisic School with him becoming part of the latter's volleyball team. He finished his secondary studies at the old Manila High School in 1927. Career Caddie work and debut Montes started working caddie at Municipal Links golf course in Intramuros. He and his brother Vicente were asked by a police officer to carry bags for American golfers in 1923. Montes observed golfers play and taught himself of the sport.
