Larry Montes
Abundio "Larry" Montes (February 28, 1911 – 1996) was a Filipino professional golfer who is the 13-time Philippine Open champion. Early life and education Montes was born on February 28, 1911, in Santa Maria, Bulacan. Montes has at least two younger brothers and two younger sisters. His family moved to Manila when he was age two where he later attended school. He studied at the Tondo Primary School and Meisic School with him becoming part of the latter's volleyball team. He finished his secondary studies at the old Manila High School in 1927. Career Caddie work and debut Montes started working caddie at Municipal Links golf course in Intramuros. He and his brother Vicente were asked by a police officer to carry bags for American golfers in 1923. Montes observed golfers play and taught himself of the sport. Japan Open Golf Championship
The is Japan's national open golf championship. Founded in 1927, it is one of the oldest professional golf tournaments in Japan. The Japan Open is one of the three richest tournaments on the Japan Golf Tour, with a prize fund of ¥210 million in 2022. Between 1992 and 2021 it was the tour's designated "Flagship event" for the purposes of the Official World Golf Ranking, with a minimum winner's points allocation of 32 points. 1959 Canada Cup
The 1959 Canada Cup took place 18–21 November at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. It was the seventh Canada Cup event, which became the World Cup in 1967. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 30 teams. These were the same teams that had competed in 1958 but without Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela and with the addition of Indonesia. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. The Australian team of Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson won by 10 strokes over the American team of Cary Middlecoff and Sam Snead. The individual competition was won by Canadian Stan Leonard, who beat Peter Thomson at the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. The 1955 Canada Cup took place June 9–12 at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland, a suburb northwest of Washington, D.C., United States. It was the third Canada Cup event, which became the World Cup in 1967. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 25 teams; the same teams that had contested the 1954 event. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. The American team of Ed Furgol and Chick Harbert won by nine strokes over the Australian team of Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson. The 1954 Canada Cup took place August 20–22 at the Laval-sur-le-Lac Golf Club in Laval, Quebec, Canada. It was the second Canada Cup event, which became the World Cup (men's golf), World Cup in 1967. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 25 teams. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. 18 holes were played on the first two days with 36 holes played on the final day. The Australian team of Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson (golfer), Peter Thomson won by four strokes over the Argentine team of Antonio Cerdá and Roberto De Vicenzo. Ben Arda (13 June 1929 – 20 December 2006) was a Filipino professional golfer. Professional career Arda, known as ''Bantam Ben'' and ''the Toy Tiger'' because of his small stature, was one of Asia's leading golfers during the 1960s and 1970s. Celestino "Tino" Mancao Tugot (6 April 1910 – 18 January 2010) was a Filipino professional golfer. Tugot is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best golfers the Philippines has produced, and the first Filipino athlete to step into the White House and shake hands with US President Dwight D.
