Manila Batang Quiapo
The Manila Batang Quiapo are a Filipino professional basketball team based in Manila and representing the district of Quiapo. The team competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) as a member of the league's North Division. The team splits its home games between San Andres Sports Complex in Malate and Paco Arena in Paco. The Manila franchise was founded as an expansion team for the 2018–19 MPBL season as the Manila Stars and saw early success in its first two seasons with Chris Bitoon and Aris Dionisio leading the team, making the division finals in 2019. The team is also noted for its acquisition of Greg Slaughter in 2024, during which the team gained the backing of businessman Sam Verzosa and the Strong Group Athletics organization and were renamed the Manila SV Batang Sampaloc. Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is a men's regional professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of 30 teams. Founded in 2017 by eight-division boxing world champion and then-Senator Manny Pacquiao, the MPBL is not intended to be a competitor to the top-flight Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), but rather to provide a gateway for local, homegrown talents to showcase their skills. The league uses a home-and-away format, similar to the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association. The MPBL started an amateur league before being granted professional status by the Games and Amusements Board. Due to Pacquiao's role in the league, it has also been referred to as Manny Pacquiao's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. 2021 MPBL Invitational
The 2021 MPBL Invitational was the preseason tournament for the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League's 2022 season and the first edition of what would become the MPBL Preseason Invitational. The tournament began on December 11, 2021 and ended on December 23, 2021 when the Basilan Jumbo Plastic beat the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards in overtime, 83–80. Philip Manalang, who hit the championship-winning buzzer beater for Basilan, was adjudged as the tournament Finals MVP. All games were played at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay at 50% capacity, making it the first pro sports event in the Philippines to allow live spectators since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament was contested by 22 teams, which is currently the most for a Preseason Invitational. The Makati Super Crunch was a Filipino professional basketball team based in Makati. The team last competed in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) from 2018 to 2023 and played its home games at Makati Coliseum. The team began play in the 2018–19 season as the Makati Skyscrapers and has since gone under multiple names. In the 2023 season, the team was acquired owned and sponsored by sports betting platform and former MPBL title sponsor OKBet and were renamed the Makati OKBet Kings. 2019–20 MPBL Season
The 2019–20 MPBL season, also known as the MPBL Lakan Season or the Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Season for sponsorship reasons, was the third season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. It was also the last season of the league's amateur era, as they would turn professional in December 2021. The regular season began June 12, 2019 with the opening ceremonies at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, and ended on February 12, 2020. The 2020 MPBL All-Star Game was also held at the same venue on February 13, 2020. The playoffs then began on February 15, 2020. MPBL Defensive Player Of The Year Award
The MPBL Defensive Player of the Year award is an annual Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League award given to the player with the best defensive performance in the regular season. It was first awarded during the 2018–19 MPBL season. As of 2024, four players have won the award, with Mark Yee being the only recipient to have won the award more than once. The 1Bataan Risers, more commonly known as the Bataan Risers, are a Filipino professional basketball team based in the province of Bataan. The team competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) as a member of the league's North Division. The team splits its home games between Bataan People's Center in Balanga and Orion Sports Complex in Orion. The Bataan franchise began play in 2018 as one of the MPBL's charter teams, originally going by the Bataan Defenders before switching to its current name the following season. Bataan also fielded a team in 3x3 basketball in the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 and has also participated in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Tour as the Balanga Chooks.
