Malcolm St. Clair (filmmaker)
Malcolm St. Clair (May 17, 1897 – June 1, 1952) was a Hollywood film director, writer, producer and actor. St. Clair's film career spanned the silent and sound era during the Hollywood Golden Age. Yankee Doodle In Berlin
''Yankee Doodle in Berlin'' is a 1919 American silent comedy and World War I film from producer Mack Sennett. A five-reel feature, it was Sennett's most expensive production up to that time. Hiram Abrams was the original State's Rights marketer before the film's release, but producer Sol Lesser bought the rights in March 1919. Bothwell Browne was a famous cross-dresser from Northern Europe. At the time this movie was produced he was the European rival of famous American cross-dresser Julian Eltinge, who starred in very similar plotted World War I propaganda film '' The Isle of Love'' (original title ''Over the Rhine''). The film was later condensed for rerelease and titled ''The Kaiser's Last Squeal''. The film is preserved by the Library of Congress. Lige Conley
Lige Conley (born Elijah Crommie; December 5, 1897 – December 11, 1937) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in 140 films between 1915 and 1938. Biography As Lige Crommie, the curly-haired young comedian joined the stock company of the Mack Sennett studio in 1915. In 1917 he moved to the up-and-coming Hal Roach studio, then producing one-reel comedies with Harold Lloyd, Bebe Daniels, and Snub Pollard. The Roach comedies credited the actor as "Lige Cromley," but since Lloyd and company dominated their pictures, which were limited to single reels, there was little chance for Lige to distinguish himself. He returned to Sennett as a stock player, again as Lige Crommie. When Sennett director Fred Fishback left Sennett for his own unit at Universal Pictures. Lige soon joined him there. The central conflict in ''The Blacksmith'' emerges when Keaton, a young blacksmith, struggles to master the shop’s machinery and implements which seem to defy his efforts to control them. The comic premise for ''The Goat'' emerges as a series of mistaken identities in which Keaton is the visual double of a murderer who is pursued by a posse. Keaton’s love interest is the daughter of the policeman who is leading the manhunt. This short contains one of Keaton's more memorable images: a distant, speeding train approaches the camera, and stops with a close-up of Keaton who has been sitting on the front of the locomotive's cowcatcher.
