Mahmud Modibbo Tukur
Mahmud Modibbo Tukur (1944–1988) was a Nigerian historian, scholar and the 4th National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Tukur was the Head of the Department of History and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Ahmadu Bello University when he died on 15 November 1988 in Zaria. Life During his time at Ahmadu Bello University, he met and studied under some influential Historians like Professor Abdullahi Smith and Professor Yusufu Bala Usman who jointly supervised his doctoral dissertation on “The Imposition of British Colonial Domination on the Sokoto Caliphate, Borno and Neighbouring States (1897-1914): A Reinterpretation of Colonial Sources”. Originally, Tukur's topic was on the role of Emirs in 20th century Northern Nigeria but during his research he decided to change the topic. Yola, Adamawa
Yola (Fulfulde: Ƴoola), meaning 'Great Plain' or 'Vast Plain Land', is the largest city, capital city and administrative center of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Located on the Benue River, it has a population of 336,648 (2010). Yola is splited into two parts. The old town of Yola where the Lamido resides is the traditional city but the new city of Jimeta (about 5 km NW) is the administrative and commercial centre. Yakubu Gowon
Yakubu Dan-Yumma 'Jack' Gowon (born 19 October 1934) is a retired Nigerian Army general and military leader. As Head of State of Nigeria, Gowon presided over a controversial Nigerian Civil War and delivered the famous "no victor, no vanquished" speech at the war's end in an effort to promote healing and reconciliation. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is an umbrella organization for trade unions in Nigeria. History The Nigerian Labour Congress was founded in December 1978, as a merger of four different organisations: the Nigeria Trade Union Congress (NTUC), Labour Unity Front (LUF), United Labour Congress (ULC) and Nigeria Workers' Council (NWC). However, the recently-established Federal Military Government, led by Murtala Mohammed, refused to recognise the new organisation, and instead set up the Adebiyi Tribunal to investigate the activities of trade unions and their leaders. The 1978 Ali Must Go Protests or the 1978 students' crisis were student protests in Nigeria following an increase in fees. It has been described as one of the most violent student agitations in Nigeria and sparked the greatest political crisis of the 1975–1979 Mohammed/Obasanjo military administration. Cause During the Olusegun Obasanjo-led military regime, Dr. Jibril Aminu, the secretary of the Nigerian University Commission, announced that due to the high cost of living in the country, students would begin to pay extra fees. According to the Nigerian University Commission, tuition fee was to remain free for all undergraduates, sub-degree diploma as well as students of teacher education. Hostel accommodation, however, would be increased to ₦90 per student per session of 36 weeks or ₦30 per student in a session of three terms.
