Mahamane Touré
Mahamane Touré is a Malian general who served as Malian Chief of Staff from 2013 to 2016, and afterwards became the Malian ambassador to Niger. Biography Touré was born in 1954 near Markala, Mali. He joined the 33rd Parachute Commando Regiment in 1972, later becoming director general of Malian customs between 1994 and 1996. Touré then served in the Malian ministry of defense. From 2006 to 2012, he served as Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace, and Security at ECOWAS. He was appointed brigadier general on October 1, 2010, and then became director of the Alioune Blondin Beye School of Peacekeeping form March 2012. Touré became Malian Chief of Staff on November 8, 2013, but resigned after Malian forces were routed during the Second Battle of Kidal in May 2014. Ultimately, he remained in his position, retiring on June 29, 2016. The Imghad Tuareg Self-Defense Group and Allies (french: Groupe autodéfense touareg Imghad et alliés, Abbreviation, abbreviated GATIA) is an armed group in Azawad, Mali. Many of its 500 to 1,000 fighters are Tuareg people#Nobility, vassals and clerics, Imghad Tuaregs, and the group supports the Malian government and army. El Hadj Ag Gamou
El Hadj Ag Gamou, born December 31, 1964, in Tidermène, Mali, is an Imghad Tuareg Malian division general. Gamou is currently the governor of Kidal Region since November 22, 2023, and has also been the head of his faction of Imghad Tuareg Self-Defense Group and Allies since the group's foundation. Prior to his governorship, Gamou served in the Malian army, commanding Malian troops against Ansar Dine and the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the early stages of the Mali War. Early life and combat Gamou was born to a family of shepherds in Tidermene, Ménaka Region, Mali. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS; also known as in French and Portuguese) is a regional political and economic union of fifteen countries located in West Africa. Markala
Markala is a commune in Mali's Ségou Region on the Niger River 35 km down stream from the town of Ségou. The commune contains 30 villages in an area of 318 square kilometers and in 2009 had a population of 45,961.. Mali's primary irrigation dam, the Markala dam, lies in the commune. The main village of the commune, Diamarabougou, is on the right bank adjacent to the dam which also serves as an important road bridge. The French colonial authorities constructed the dam between 1934 and 1945 to irrigate farmland with the intention of producing cotton for the textile industry. The dam is 2450 m in length and functions as a weir in that water can flow over the top. It diverts water into a canal system that extends 135 km to the north past the small towns of Niono and Sokolo in the 'Delta Mort' region. Didier Dacko
Didier Dacko is a Malian general who commanded Malian forces during the early stages of the Mali War, and reversed the gains made by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) and jihadist groups in 2013. Biography Dacko was born in San, Mali, in 1967 to a Bobo family. He graduated at the top of his class from the Kati Military Prytaneum. When the Mali War broke out in 2012, Dacko was a colonel-major and the commander in Gao Region. In February and March, he led reinforcements to try and break the siege of Tessalit, but was not able to. On March 31, 2012, he was forced to abandon Gao and return to Sévaré. Dacko commanded Malian forces during the Battle of Konna in January 2013, effectively halting the spread southward of jihadist groups.
