Didier Dacko
Didier Dacko is a Malian general who commanded Malian forces during the early stages of the Mali War, and reversed the gains made by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) and jihadist groups in 2013. Biography Dacko was born in San, Mali, in 1967 to a Bobo family. He graduated at the top of his class from the Kati Military Prytaneum. When the Mali War broke out in 2012, Dacko was a colonel-major and the commander in Gao Region. In February and March, he led reinforcements to try and break the siege of Tessalit, but was not able to. On March 31, 2012, he was forced to abandon Gao and return to Sévaré. Dacko commanded Malian forces during the Battle of Konna in January 2013, effectively halting the spread southward of jihadist groups. He then commanded Malian forces in recapturing Gao in January 2013. He then captured Anéfis from the MNLA in June 2013. Anéfis
Anefif or Anéfis is a Saharan village and commune in the Cercle of Kidal in the Kidal Region of north-eastern Mali. Geography Anefif is located on the Tessalit Trail. It lies southwest of Kidal on the route linking Kidal to Bourem and Gao. In 2009 the commune had a population of 5,087. There are multiple rocks and stones made from volcanic material. History In 2013, the Malian Military attacked Tuareg rebels living in the village. The war was highly criticized by the military, and the press, who claimed that it was too invasive and violent. Climate The commune has a Saharian climate and is too dry for rain-fed agriculture. The annual rainfall of around 150 mm occurs between late June and early September. G5 Sahel or G5S (french: G5 du Sahel) is an institutional framework for coordination of regional cooperation in development policies and security matters in west Africa. It was formed on 16 February 2014 in Nouakchott, Mauritania, at a summit of five Sahel countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger. It adopted a convention of establishment on 19 December 2014, and is permanently seated in Mauritania. The coordination is organised on different levels. Mahamane Touré
Mahamane Touré is a Malian general who served as Malian Chief of Staff from 2013 to 2016, and afterwards became the Malian ambassador to Niger. Biography Touré was born in 1954 near Markala, Mali. He joined the 33rd Parachute Commando Regiment in 1972, later becoming director general of Malian customs between 1994 and 1996. Touré then served in the Malian ministry of defense. From 2006 to 2012, he served as Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace, and Security at ECOWAS. He was appointed brigadier general on October 1, 2010, and then became director of the Alioune Blondin Beye School of Peacekeeping form March 2012. Touré became Malian Chief of Staff on November 8, 2013, but resigned after Malian forces were routed during the Second Battle of Kidal in May 2014. MINUSMA
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (, MINUSMA) is a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Mali. The High Council for the Unity of Azawad (HCUA) (French: Haut conseil pour l'unité de l'Azawad) is a Tuareg political movement formed on May 2, 2013, during the Mali War. The movement was initially called the High Council of Azawad (HCA) (French: Haut conseil de l'Azawad) before changing its name on May 19, 2013. History The High Council of Azawad was created to promote talks between Tuareg rebels and the Malian government during the early stages of the Mali War. The council was formed by Mohamed Ag Intalla along with other Tuareg representatives who sought a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Ag Intalla called on the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, MNLA and the Azawad Islamic Movement (MIA) to join the HCA on the day of its creation. Kidal
Kidal ( Tuareg Berber: ⴾⴸⵍ, KDL, Kidal) is a town and commune in the desert region of northern Mali. The town lies northeast of Gao and is the capital of the Kidal Cercle and the Kidal Region. The commune has an area of about and includes the town of Kidal and 31 other settlements. History On 30 March 2012, Kidal and its military base were captured by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad as part of the Tuareg rebellion for the independence of Azawad.
