Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips (''née'' Magie; May 9, 1866 – March 2, 1948) was an American game designer, writer, feminist, and Georgist. She invented ''The Landlord's Game'', the precursor to ''Monopoly'', to illustrate teachings of the progressive era economist Henry George. Life and occupations Elizabeth J. Magie was born in Macomb, Illinois, in 1866 to Mary Jane (née Ritchie) and James K. Magie, a newspaper publisher and an abolitionist who accompanied Abraham Lincoln as he traveled around Illinois in the late 1850s debating politics with Stephen Douglas. After moving to the D.C. and Maryland area in the early 1880s, she worked as a stenographer and typist at the Dead Letter Office. She was also a short story and poetry writer, comedian, stage actress, feminist, and engineer. William Francis Magie (1858–1943) was an American physicist, a founder of the American Physical Society (president from 1910 to 1912) and the first professor of physics at Princeton University, where he had graduated (class valedictorian, 1879) and where he served for two decades as dean of the faculty. His papers on the contact angle of liquids and solids and on the specific heat of solutions were notable, as was his text ''Principles of Physics''. He was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society (1896). Personal views Magie served as the president of the Men's Anti-Suffrage League of New Jersey. Her first memoir, ''The Queen of Peace Room'', from Wilfrid Laurier University Press was shortlisted for the Canadian Women's Studies Award, ForeWord magazine's Book of the Year Award, and the Judy Grahn Award. Occurring over a week-long retreat at an isolated retreat house, ''The Queen of Peace Room'' is an exploration of memory and of violence against women and children. A second memoir, ''Street Angel'', received the Silver Medal from Independent Publishers Awards and was short listed for Book of the Year/memoir by Foreword Magazine.
