Macquarie Trio
Macquarie Trio is an Australian chamber music ensemble. They received nominations for the 1996 and 2001 ARIA Awards for Best Classical Album with their album ''Beethoven Piano Trios'' and ''Schubert: Complete Piano Trios''. The Trio has commissioned works by Nigel Westlake and Elena Kats-Chernin. The Trio disbanded in 2006 after the Macquarie University withdrew their funding. Charmian Gadd
Charmian Gadd OAM (b.1942) is an Australian violinist and teacher. Career Gadd grew up in Ourimbah, New South Wales, and learned to play violin at three years old. Her family listened to Alfred Ernest Floyd's ''Music Lover’s Hour'' on ABC Radio, and performances by classical musicians. She won prizes in the City of Sydney Eisteddfod, and was enrolled in the Conservatorium High School in 1954. In 1962 she won the ABC Young Performers Awards for her violin playing. She moved to Sydney to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she graduated in 1960, and took further lessons in violin with Richard Goldner. In 1966 she moved to the United States with her former teacher Richard Goldner. They taught at Pittsburgh and Washington (state) and married in 1970, when he was 62, and returned to Australia permanently in 1981, after occasionally visiting on tour. Kathryn Selby
Kathryn Shauna Selby AM (born 1962) is an Australian classical pianist. She is often known as Kathy Selby. Biography She grew up in Sydney. She entered the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the age of seven, studying under Nancy Salas. She followed this with study with Béla Síki at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1976 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. In 1978 she won an American Music Scholarship, which led to her making her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1981 she received the Australia Council's International Fellowship for Studies in the United States. She performed at the United Nations General Assembly in an Australian Government sponsored concert in aid of UNICEF, in association with Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music under Mieczysław Horszowski, and won the prestigious Rachmaninoff Prize and the institute's Gold Medal. The Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (commonly known informally as ARIA Music Awards, ARIA Awards, or simply the ARIAs) is an annual series of awards nights celebrating the Australian music industry, put on by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). ARIA Award For Best Classical Album
The ARIA Music Award for Best Classical Album, is an award presented within the Fine Arts Awards at the annual ARIA Music Awards. The ARIA Awards recognise "the many achievements of Aussie artists across all music genres", and have been given by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) since 1987. Classical albums by Australian solo artists and groups are eligible, as well as Australian featured artists or soloists involved with non-Australian ensembles or orchestras (providing the album packaging credits the Australian/s as the featured artist/s). Nigel Westlake
Nigel Westlake (born 6 September 1958) is an Australian composer, musician and conductor. As a composer for the screen, his film credits include the feature films ''Ali's Wedding'', ''Paper Planes'', ''Miss Potter'', ''Babe'', '' Babe: Pig in the City'', '' Children of the Revolution'' and '' The Nugget''. He also composed the theme for ''SBS World News''. Biography Westlake was born in Sydney, the son of Sydney Symphony Orchestra principal clarinettist Donald Westlake. Westlake studied the clarinet with his father and subsequently left school early to pursue a performance career in music. By the age of 17, Westlake was touring Australia and the world, performing as a freelance clarinettist, bass clarinettist and saxophonist with ballet companies, a circus troupe, chamber music ensembles, fusion bands and orchestras. Elena Kats-Chernin
Elena Davidovna Kats-Chernin (born 4 November 1957) is an Uzbek-born Australian composer and pianist, best known for her ballet ''Wild Swans''. Early life and education Elena Kats-Chernin was born in Tashkent (now the capital of independent Uzbekistan, but then part of the Soviet Union) and is Jewish. She studied at the Yaroslavl Music School and the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow from age 14. She migrated to Australia in 1975, continuing her studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, under Richard Toop (composition) and Gordon Watson (piano). She graduated from the Conservatorium in 1980. She also participated in the Darlinghurst underground theatre scene, with groups such as Cabaret Conspiracy, Fifi Lamour, Boom Boom La Burn and others, often under the name Elena Kats. ARIA Music Awards Of 1996
The 10th Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (generally known as the ARIA Music Awards or simply The ARIAs) was held on 30 September 1996 at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
