Lurnea
Lurnea is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 35 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Liverpool. History Lurnea was originally home to the Cabrogal people who spoke the Darug language. Following British settlement of the area in the 1800s, it was given the colloquial name Hillview as the suburb had nice views of the surrounding Liverpool area, and this name persisted until after World War I when the land was converted into a soldier settlement which provided the soldiers with enough room for a house and a small farm. It was renamed Lurnea which means "a resting place". Lurnea Post Office opened on 15 February 1921. A street was also named after the old name of the suburb – Hillview Parade. Lurnea High School (abbreviated as LHS) is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school located in , a south-western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. History Established in 1965, the school caters for approximately 650 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom four percent identified as Indigenous Australians and eighty percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the New South Wales Department of Education; and the current principal is Kylie Landrigan. In 2024, a physical education teacher at the school, Tayla Brailey, was arrested and charged with committing sexual intercourse and sexual touching of a person between 17 and 18 years old under special care. Cartwright is a suburb in south-western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 38 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Liverpool. History In the 1800s, this general area was known as "Cross Roads". The name appears to originate from 1821, when a notice published by John Oxley, the Surveyor General of New South Wales stated that "this Cross Road from Windsor ends in the new Bringelly Road".
