Luigi Ambrosio
Luigi Ambrosio (born 27 January 1963) is a professor at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy. His main fields of research are the calculus of variations and geometric measure theory. Biography Ambrosio entered the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in 1981. He obtained his degree under the guidance of Ennio De Giorgi in 1985 at University of Pisa, and the Diploma at Scuola Normale. He obtained his PhD in 1988. He is currently professor at the Scuola Normale, having taught previously at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", the University of Pisa, and the University of Pavia. Ambrosio also taught and conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the ETH in Zurich, and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. He is the Managing Editor of the scientific journal '' Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations'', and member of the editorial boards of scientific journals. Alba, Piedmont
Alba (; ) is a town and ''comune'' of Piedmont, Italy, in the Province of Cuneo. Riemann Prize
The Riemann Prize is a mathematics prize awarded every three years to outstanding mathematicians between 40 and 65 years of age, given by the Riemann International School of Mathematics in Italy. The award is named in honor of Bernhard Riemann. Established in 2019, it was first awarded to Terence Tao in 2020. It is co-sponsored by the regional government of Lombardy, all public and private universities in the region, and the municipality of Varese. ISI Highly Cited Researcher
The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) was an academic publishing service, founded by Eugene Garfield in Philadelphia in 1956. ISI offered scientometric and bibliographic database services. Its specialty was citation indexing and analysis, a field pioneered by Garfield. Services ISI maintained citation databases covering thousands of academic journals, including a continuation of its longtime print-based indexing service the Science Citation Index (SCI), as well as the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI). Italian Mathematical Union
The Italian Mathematical Union () is a mathematical society based in Italy. It was founded on December 7, 1922, by Luigi Bianchi, Vito Volterra, and most notably, Salvatore Pincherle, who became the Union's first President. History Salvatore Pincherle, professor at the University of Bologna, sent on 31 March 1922 a letter to all Italian mathematicians in which he planned the establishment of a national mathematical society. The creation was inspired by similar initiatives in other countries, such as the Société mathématique de France (1872), the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (1891), the American Mathematical Society (1891) and, above all, the International Mathematical Union (1920). Calculus is the mathematical study of continuous change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape, and algebra is the study of generalizations of arithmetic operations. Originally called infinitesimal calculus or "the calculus of infinitesimals", it has two major branches, differential calculus and integral calculus. The former concerns instantaneous rates of change, and the slopes of curves, while the latter concerns accumulation of quantities, and areas under or between curves. These two branches are related to each other by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Geometric Measure Theory
In mathematics, geometric measure theory (GMT) is the study of geometric properties of sets (typically in Euclidean space) through measure theory. It allows mathematicians to extend tools from differential geometry to a much larger class of surfaces that are not necessarily smooth. History Geometric measure theory was born out of the desire to solve Plateau's problem (named after Joseph Plateau) which asks if for every smooth closed curve in \mathbb^3 there exists a surface of least area among all surfaces whose boundary equals the given curve. The calculus of variations (or variational calculus) is a field of mathematical analysis that uses variations, which are small changes in Function (mathematics), functions and functional (mathematics), functionals, to find maxima and minima of functionals: Map (mathematics), mappings from a set of Function (mathematics), functions to the real numbers. Functionals are often expressed as definite integrals involving functions and their derivatives. Functions that maximize or minimize functionals may be found using the Euler–Lagrange equation of the calculus of variations.
