Lovendegem
Lovendegem () is a town and former municipality located in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, and in the province of East Flanders. The municipality comprised the towns of Lovendegem proper and Vinderhoute. In 2018, Lovendegem had a total population of 9,574. The total area is 19.48 km². History The name of the town was first recorded as ''Lovendenghiem'' in 1150, but there are traces of human settlements back to the Iron Age. The name means "settlement of the people of Lubantos (person)". Lovendegem used to be a complicated patchwork of '' heerlijkheden'' (landed estates) and one barony. The religious wars of the late 16th century and the subsequent repression by the Iron Duke caused a near abandonment of Lovendegem. For most of its history, it was an agricultural community. Vinderhoute
Vinderhoute is a village in the municipality of Lievegem in the province of East Flanders in Belgium. It is located in the Flemish Valley about north-west of Ghent. History Vinderhoute is located in the on the left bank of the and is surrounded by waterways. A settlement has been discovered from the early La Tène culture near Vinderhoute. The village was first mentioned in 966 as containing a church and farm belonging to the Saint Bavo's Abbey. The ''heerlijkheid'' Vinderhoute was one of the oldest fiefs of the County of Flanders. Vinderhoute was an independent municipality until 1977 when it was merged into Lovendegem. In 2019, it became a ''deelgemeente'' of Lievegem. Buildings and sights Schouwbroek Castle was known to exist since 1755. In 1894, it was rebuilt in eclectic style, and a large park was laid out around the castle. Lievegem () is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders that arose on 1 January 2019 from the merging of the municipalities of Waarschoot, Lovendegem and Zomergem. The merged municipality has an area of 80.78 km² and is home to 26,441 inhabitants as of 2021. A referendum was held for the new name of the municipality, and 55% voted for Lievegem (literally '' Lieve Canal settlement''). Nevele () is a village and former municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Hansbeke, Landegem, Merendree, Nevele proper, Poesele and Vosselare. In 2018, the municipality of Nevele had a total population of 12,179. The Arrondissement of Ghent (; ) is the largest of the six administrative arrondissements in the Province of East Flanders, Belgium. It is both an administrative and a judicial arrondissement. However, the Judicial Arrondissement of Ghent also comprises the municipalities of the Arrondissement of Eeklo. History The Arrondissement of Ghent was created in 1800 as the first arrondissement in the Department of Escaut (). Maurice De Waele
Maurice De Waele (; 27 December 1896 – 14 February 1952) was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer. De Waele placed 2nd in the 1927 Tour, an hour and fifty eight minutes Nicolas Frantz and 3rd in 1928, again won by Frantz. However, he is most famous for winning the 1929 Tour de France. He led the Tour until stage seven when two punctures on the way to Bordeaux cost him the yellow jersey to no less than three other rides on the same time in the general classification, Frantz, Andre Leducq and Victor Fontan. Fontan was the sole leader of the race when a broken bike led to his retirement, leaving De Waele in the lead, seventy five seconds ahead of Frantz. However, punctures to De Waele gave the lead to his nearest rival until he too suffered the same problem. With Frantz out of the running for the title, sickness in Grenoble nearly cost him too but with help from his teammates, he was led to victory.
