Waarschoot () is a town and former municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders, in Belgium. The municipality comprised the towns of Waarschoot proper. In 2018, Waarschoot had a total population of 7,967. The total area is . Until 31 December 2018, Waarschoot was one of the few Belgian municipalities having a female mayor. Her name is Ann Coopman. Ann Coopman Effective 1 January 2019, Waarschoot, Lovendegem, and Zomergem were merged into the new municipality of Lievegem, with only one mayor remaining, Tony Vermeire (CD&V). Lievegem
Lievegem () is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders that arose on 1 January 2019 from the merging of the municipalities of Waarschoot, Lovendegem and Zomergem. The merged municipality has an area of 80.78 km2 and is home to 26,441 inhabitants as of 2021. A referendum was held for the new name of the municipality, and 55% voted for Lievegem (literally '' Lieve Canal settlement''). Lovendegem () is a town and former Municipalities of Belgium, municipality located in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, and in the province of East Flanders. The municipality comprised the towns of Lovendegem proper and Vinderhoute. In 2018, Lovendegem had a total population of 9,574. The total area is 19.48 km2. Kaprijke () is a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality in the Belgium, Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Kaprijke proper and . In 2021, Kaprijke had a total population of 6,508. History The name Kaprijke comes from Gallo-Roman name "Capricum" which means "Land of Caprius". It used to be the site of a Roman garrison, which can still be seen at the square in front of the old town hall. Kaprijke received City rights in the Low Countries, city rights in 1240 by Joan, Countess of Flanders. During the 14th and 15th century, the cloth industry flourished in Kaprijke.
