Louis Castex
Louis Joseph Marie Nestor Castex (born February 3, 1896, in Pinsaguel, Haute-Garonne, France; died September 28, 1968, in Paris) was a French aviation pioneer, politician, pilot, and author. He is best known for his travel writing in the mid-20th century. Life Castex studied law and graduated with a Licencié en droit (Bachelor of Laws). He participated in World War I, conducting several reconnaissance flights and achieving the rank of Colonel. He became the Director of Transatlantic Services for Air France and befriended Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. He collaborated with Georges Mandel, the French Minister of Posts and later a member of the Résistance. One day before the German invasion of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg and the start of the Western Front of World War II in Western Europe, Castex embarked on a round-the-world flight in an aircraft. Pinsaguel (; ) is a commune in the Haute-Garonne department in southwestern France. Geography The commune was traversed by the rivers of the Garonne and the Ariège. Pan American World Airways
Pan American World Airways, originally founded as Pan American Airways and more commonly known as Pan Am, was an airline that was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States for much of the 20th century. The first airline to fly worldwide, it pioneered innovations such as Wide-body aircraft, jumbo jets and computerized reservation systems, and introduced the Boeing 707, first American jetliner in 1958. Boeing 314
The Boeing 314 Clipper was an American long-range flying boat produced by Boeing from 1938 to 1941. One of the largest aircraft of its time, it had the range to cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. For its wing, Boeing re-used the design from the earlier XB-15 bomber prototype. Twelve Clippers were built, nine of which served with Pan Am. It was the first aircraft to carry a sitting American president, when in 1943 Franklin D. Roosevelt flew from Miami to the Casablanca Conference in Morocco, via Trinidad, Brazil, and The Gambia. Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur
Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès (9 February 1880 — 31 May 1958) was a Belgian painter from Ixelles who lived the latter part of his life in Bali. Biography Le Mayeur came to Bali at Singaraja by boat in 1932. He then stayed in Denpasar and was fascinated by what remained then of Balinese culture, including the Balinese people's traditional way of life, the temple rituals and local dances. He was also impressed by the light, color and beauty of the surroundings in the then still quite unspoilt island. Le Mayeur rented a house in ''banjar'' Kelandis, Denpasar, where he got acquainted with 15-year-old legong dancer, Ni Nyoman Pollok, known by her nickname Ni Pollok , who later on became Le Mayeur's model for his paintings. Charles Kingsford Smith
Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith (9 February 18978 November 1935), nicknamed Smithy, was an Australian aviation pioneer. He piloted the first transpacific flight and the first flight between Australia and New Zealand. Kingsford Smith was born in Brisbane. He grew up in Sydney, leaving school at the age of 16 and becoming an engineering apprentice. He joined the Australian Army in 1915 and was a motorcycle despatch rider on the Gallipoli campaign. He later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 after being shot down. After the war's end, Kingsford Smith worked as a Barnstorming, barnstormer in England and the United States before returning to Australia in 1921. He subsequently joined West Australian Airways as one of the country's first commercial pilots.
