Liu Dan (artist)
''The family name is Liu.'' Liu Dan 刘丹 (born 1953) is a Chinese artist, known for his synthesis of Western and Chinese painting, especially in ink painting. Biography Born in Nanjing, Liu studied the Confucian classics, poetry, painting and calligraphy with his grandfather. After the Cultural Revolution he studied traditional Chinese painting under Ya Ming 亚明 (1924-2002) at the Academy of Chinese Painting, Hangzhou, 1978-1981. In 1981 he moved to Hawaii, where he studied Western art, and developed his distinctive style: a combination of classical Chinese painting and photo-realism. The Cultural Revolution, formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a Social movement, sociopolitical movement in the China, People's Republic of China (PRC). It was launched by Mao Zedong in 1966 and lasted until his death in 1976. Its stated goal was to preserve Ideology of the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese socialism by purging remnants of Capitalism, capitalist and Four Olds, traditional elements from Chinese culture, Chinese society. Ai Weiwei ( ; , IPA: ; born 28 August 1957) is a Chinese contemporary artist, documentarian, and activist. Ai grew up in the far northwest of China, where he lived under harsh conditions due to his father's exile. As an activist, he has been openly critical of the Chinese Government's stance on democracy and human rights. He investigated government corruption and cover-ups, in particular the Sichuan schools corruption scandal following the collapse of " tofu-dreg schools" in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Xu Bing (; born 1955) is a Chinese artist who served as vice-president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is known for his printmaking skills and installation art, as well as his creative artistic use of language, words, and text and how they have affected our understanding of the world. He is an A.D. White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University. He was awarded the MacArthur Fellows Program in 1999 and the Fukuoka Prize in 2003. Biography Born in Chongqing in 1955, Xu grew up in Beijing. His father was the head of the history department at Peking University. In 1975, near the end of the Cultural Revolution, he was relocated to the countryside.
