Performance
A performance is an act or process of staging or presenting a play, concert, or other form of entertainment. It is also defined as the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function. Performance has evolved globally, from ancient rituals to modern artistic expressions. Expanding the article with historical and cultural perspectives would improve its scope. Gretchen Baer
Gretchen Baer (born 1963, in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts) is an American painter and performance artist living in Bisbee, Arizona. Baer is known for painting mile-long murals on the southern side of the US-Mexico border fence in collaboration with a group of Mexican children known as the "Border Bedazzlers." Leigh Bowery
Leigh Bowery (26 March 1961 – 31 December 1994) was an Australian performance artist, club promoter, and fashion designer. Bowery's performances featured striking costumes and make-up and were conceptual, flamboyant, outlandish, and sometimes controversial. Based in London for much of his adult life, he was a model and muse for the English painter Lucian Freud. Kate Bornstein
Katherine Vandam Bornstein (born March 15, 1948) is an American author, playwright, performance artist, actor, and gender theorist. In 1986, Bornstein started identifying as gender non-conforming and has stated "I don't call myself a woman, I know I'm not a man" after having been assigned male at birth and receiving sex reassignment surgery. Bornstein now identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them and she/her. Bornstein has also written about having anorexia, being a survivor of PTSD, and being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Blue Man Group
Blue Man Group is an American performance art company formed in New York City in 1987. It is known for its stage productions that incorporate many kinds of music and art, both popular and obscure. Its performers, known as Blue Men, have their skin painted blue. They are Mime artist, mute during shows and always appear in groups of three. As of 2025, the company has shows running in Berlin, Boston, Las Vegas, and Shanghai. A typical production employs seven to nine full-time Blue Men who are selected by audition. Mark Bloch (born 1956) is an American conceptual artist, mail artist, performance artist, visual artist, archivist and writer whose work combines visuals and text as well as performance and media to explore ideas of long-distance communication, including across time. Early years and education Mark Bloch was born to American parents in Würzburg, West Germany, in 1956 where his father was based as soldier of the US Army. Bloch grew up in Cleveland and then Akron, Ohio. Exposure in his youth to Robert Wyatt, the Fugs, and Yoko Ono and the unexpected discovery of Frank Zappa's album Freak Out! in his junior high school library led to an interest in the fringes of art. Guy Bleus (born October 23, 1950) is a Belgian artist, archivist and writer. He is associated with olfactory art, visual poetry, performance art and the mail art movement. His work covers different areas, including administration (which he calls ''Artministration''), postal and olfactory communication. Art and archive Bleus was born on October 23, 1950, in Hasselt. Nicole Blackman
Nicole Blackman (born November 30, 1971) is a New York City–born performance artist, poet, author, and vocalist. Literary career Blackman is involved in the North American goth, spoken word, and transgressive literature scenes. Blackman self-published three now out-of-print chapbooks: ''Pretty'', ''Sweet'', and ''Nice''. The three were collected in Akashic Books' ''Blood Sugar'' (2002). Black Market International (BMI)
Black Market International (BMI) is a performance artist collective with international members, each with an established and independent practice as a solo performer. Since 1985 the group has presented durational collective performances worldwide. The movement was founded under the name ''Market project'' in 1985 in Poznan (Poland) with founders Boris Nieslony, Zygmunt Piotrowski, Tomas Ruller and Jürgen Fritz. In 1986 for the first European tour the name ''Black Market'' was taken. In 1990/91 the group appeared as ''Black Market International'', with personal changes . There have been a variety of different versions of what BMI is about, as the group always avoided the definition of an organised group. Joseph Beuys
Joseph Heinrich Beuys ( ; ; 12 May 1921 – 23 January 1986) was a German artist, teacher, performance artist, and Aesthetics, art theorist whose work reflected concepts of humanism and sociology. Rebecca Belmore
Rebecca Belmore (born March 22, 1960) is a Canadian interdisciplinary Anishinaabekwe artist who is notable for politically conscious and socially aware performance and installation work. She is Ojibwe and a member of Obishikokaang (Lac Seul First Nation). Belmore currently lives in Toronto, Ontario. Belmore has performed and exhibited nationally and internationally since 1986. Her work focuses on issues of place and identity, and confronts challenges for First Nations People. Her work addresses history, voice and voicelessness, place, and identity. Katherine Behar is an American new media and performance artist and writer based in Brooklyn, New York.
