A mint or breath mint is a food item often consumed as an after-meal refreshment or before business and social engagements to improve breath odor. Mints are commonly believed to soothe the stomach given their association with natural byproducts of the plant genus ''Mentha''. Mints sometimes contain derivatives from plants such as peppermint oil or spearmint oil, or wintergreen from the plant genus '' Gaultheria''. Fox's Confectionery
Fox's Confectionery is an English confectionery company based in Braunstone, Leicester which was founded in 1880. History The company was set up by Walter Richard Fox as a wholesale grocery and confectionery business in 1880. It started in a Victorian warehouse in Leicester. By 1897 Fox was manufacturing over 100 different confectionery lines. In 1969, the company was acquired by Mackintosh's, a year prior to the creation of Rowntree Mackintosh when Mackintosh merged with Rowntree's of York. After purchasing Rowntree-Macintosh in 1988, Nestlé sold the Fox's Brand and its Leicester site to Northern Foods in 2001. The company was sold to Big Bear Ltd in 2003. Big Bear Confectionery had sites in Blackburn, Leicester and Nimbus. Fox's Glacier Mints are a brand of boiled mint sold in the UK since 1918. History Background Walter Richard Fox, the founder of Fox's Confectionery, originally manufactured sweets as part of the Joyce and Fox partnership, but this was dissolved in 1897. Fox continued to make confectionery, and was joined in 1914 by his son Eric. Product creation and development Glacier Mints were first created in 1918 by Eric Fox. To begin with, they were called Acme Clear Mint Fingers, but this was changed to Glacier Mints in 1919, apparently on the advice of Eric Fox's wife. Fisherman's Friend
Fisherman's Friend is a brand of strong menthol lozenges manufactured by the Lofthouse company in Fleetwood, Lancashire, England. History Fisherman's Friend was originally developed by pharmacist James Lofthouse in 1865 to relieve various respiratory problems suffered by fishermen working in the extreme conditions of the northern deep-sea fishing grounds. Though he developed it as an extremely strong liquid remedy containing menthol and eucalyptus oil, Lofthouse later made the liquid into small lozenges, which were easier to transport and administer. According to the manufacturer, the fishermen began to refer to the lozenges as "friends", hence the name. Extra is a brand of sugarfree chewing gum produced by the Wrigley Company in North America, Europe, Australia and some parts of Africa and Asia. Eclipse is a brand of chewing gum and breath mint, first introduced in the U.S. by Wrigley Company, the Wrigley Company in 1999 as its first entrant into the pellet gum segment. However, it was modeled after Excel (gum), Excel in Canada, which was launched in 1991, eight years before Eclipse was launched. Eclipse is a brand that promises to give users "powerful fresh breath". It comes in blister packs of 12, the Big-E-Pak – 60 count plastic container of candy-coated pellets, and the recently added split packs that include 18 pellets. Dentyne Mints
Dentyne () is a brand of chewing gum available in several countries globally. It is owned by Mondelēz International. In 1899, a New York City druggist Franklin V. Canning formulated a chewing gum which he promoted as an aid to oral hygiene. "To prevent decay, To sweeten the breath, To keep teeth white," read the package. Mr. Canning called his new gum Dentyne which is a combination of the words "dental" and "hygiene" (and also sounds like ''dentine'' as some people pronounce that word). In 1916 the brand was sold to the American Chicle Company. By the 1930s, Dentyne was produced by the Adams Gum Company. Adams was one of the companies that made up the American Chicle Company. Clorets
Clorets is a line of chewing gum and mints made by Cadbury Adams. It was introduced in 1951. Clorets gum and candy contain Actizol, a proprietary ingredient that contains chlorophyll, which purportedly acts as an active ingredient to eliminate mouth odors. Clorets was originally owned by The Warner-Lambert Company under its Adams division until Pfizer took over in 2000. The Adams division was sold to Cadbury-Schweppes in 2003, which is now known as Cadbury Adams (later acquired by Kraft Foods).
