Sun TV is an Indian Tamil-language general entertainment pay television channel owned by Sun TV Network. It was launched on 14 April 1993. It is the flagship channel of the Chennai-based media conglomerate Sun Group's Sun TV Network. It was founded and is owned by Kalanithi Maran. It started airing on open network (Antenna) on 14 July 2002 at the time of "Majunu" Tamil movie premiering. Then it was removed from this open network on 2005. It was also removed from free on 9 November 2007. Sun TV launched its HD version on 11 December 2011. Star Vijay is an Indian Tamil language general entertainment pay television channel owned by JioStar, a joint venture between Viacom18 and Disney India. The channel telecasts programmes such as serials, reality shows & Tamil films. History The channel was first launched by N. P. V. Ramasamy Udayar on 24 November 1994, as Golden Eagle Communication (GEC). That same year it applied for the line-up of Singapore Cable Vision becoming the first Tamil channel on offer. United Breweries Group acquired the channel in 1995 and renamed it as Vijay TV. The UTV Group bought the controlling interest from United Breweries Group in 1999 for million. Global Tamil Vision (GTV) is a Tamil language digital satellite television channel. Its main audience are Sri Lankan Tamils living in Europe, Australia and the Middle East. Tharisanam TV Australia was launched in January 2007 after the closure of Sigaram TV Australia in September 2006 due to Sigaram's bankruptcy. Tharisanam TV acquired the existing subscribers from Sigaram TV. In May 2007 when the France-based pay TV, Tamil Television Network (TTN) was shut down, Tharisanam TV acquired the assets and subscribers of Tamil Television Network (TTN) and expanded its service to Europe. However Tharisanam TV Europe was not broadcasting the same programmes that were broadcast in Australia and New Zealand. In Europe for a short period of time during mid-2008 Tharisanam TV's name was changed to Thendral TV due change of management.
